The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) has a series of free courses open, which cater to different profiles of students and knowledge enthusiasts.

With 100% online formats and diverse support materials, the courses are aimed at both those who wish to deepen their academic training and those seeking cultural and creative experiences.

Among the available options are courses in Greek Poetry, Graphic Production, Brazilian Literature focusing on Black Consciousness, and Introduction to Academic Texts.

Each program has been structured to offer theoretical and practical content, allowing participants to develop skills in reading, analysis, written expression, and artistic production.

Greek Poetry

The free course “Greek Poetry – Edition 2025” from UFRGS aims to present the poetic genres of Ancient Greece, based on Aristotle’s Poetics.

Participants will primarily learn about Epic Poetry and Lyric Poetry, leaving dramatic poetry for future courses.

The content is organized into four modules:

  • Module 1 – Epic Poetry: introduction to the concepts and main works of Greek epic poetry.
  • Module 2 – Sappho: analysis of the author’s lyric poetry.
  • Module 3 – Simonides: study of fragments and historical contexts.
  • Module 4 – Anacreon, Ibycus and Anacreontics: discussion of the works and characteristics of lyric poems.

Graphic Production: History, Fundamentals, and Manual Printing

Aimed at students of Visual Design and Product Design, the free course “Graphic Production – Edition 2025” offers a historical and practical view of printing processes.

Participants learn from traditional engraving techniques to manual methods adapted to the contemporary design context.

The program is divided into six modules:

  • Module 1 – History of Printing Processes: historical context and evolution of techniques.
  • Module 2 – Fundamentals: Fonts, Images, and Grid: essential aspects of graphic composition.
  • Module 3 – Fundamentals: Colors: study of colors, resolution, and matrix separation.
  • Module 4 – Manual Processes in Practice: Linoleum Engraving.
  • Module 5 – Techniques with Simple Materials: practical experimentation.
  • Module 6 – Stencil and Screen Printing at Home: practical application with household resources.

Oliveira Silveira

Another highlight is the course “Oliveira Silveira: The Poet of Brazilian Black Consciousness – Edition 2025.”

Aimed at those who wish to learn about the life and work of the Brazilian writer, the program addresses his contribution to the appreciation of Black cultures and his influence on regional and national literature.

The course is divided into three modules:

  • Module 1 – Life: the poet’s trajectory, family origins, and academic background.
  • Module 2 – Work: main publications, literary influences, and creative production.
  • Module 3 – Black Consciousness: civic participation, historical events such as November 20, and public policies related to racial equality.

Introduction to Academic Texts

The free course “Introduction to Academic Texts – Edition 2025” from UFRGS has been developed for students entering higher education who need to understand the structure and particularities of academic writing.

The program aims to facilitate reading, interpretation, and production of scientific texts, aiding in the development of critical thinking and access to academic events.

The course structure includes five modules:

  • Module 1 – Structure of the Scientific Article: presentation of the structure of articles and the circulation of scientific knowledge.
  • Module 2 – Composition and Intertextuality: citation techniques and relationships between scientific articles.
  • Module 3 – Theoretical Review of the Scientific Article: formation of reading and analysis of references.
  • Module 4 – Articulation between Theoretical Review and Data Analysis: interpretation of objective and evaluative results.
  • Module 5 – Summary and Academic Review: practice of structuring summaries and reviews for academic events.
