Unigel Announces Resumption of Urea Production Starting in September. The Measure Is a Response to a Slight Improvement in the Petrochemical Cycle and the Forecast of Increased Demand for Urea for the Upcoming Winter Crop.
Unigel, one of the leading chemical companies in Latin America and the largest producer of nitrogen fertilizers in Brazil, announced last Thursday, (08/17), that its Nitrogen Fertilizers Unit, located in Laranjeiras, will resume urea production starting next month in September. The decision comes in response to a slight improvement in the petrochemical cycle and was announced by the company’s CEO, Roberto Noronha Santos, at a press conference held on Thursday.
Strategic Resumption Boosts State Economy and Maintains Jobs
The resumption of urea production occurs one week after the temporary suspension of fertilizer manufacturing activities at the unit.
The CEO, Roberto Noronha Santos, emphasized that while the scenario for the chemical industry remains challenging, the company sees this as an opportune moment to gradually and responsibly restart its operations.

Unigel Prioritizes National Independence in Nitrogen Fertilizer Production
Additionally, Unigel continues negotiations with Petrobras for projects related to renewable energy and fertilizers.
The company reinforces its strategic importance in the sector, as a significant share of national demand for nitrogen fertilizers is still met by imports.
About 85% of this demand is satisfied by imported products, highlighting the need to increase domestic production to reduce the country’s vulnerability.
The Laranjeiras plant, when operational, has an impressive production capacity, able to generate 450,000 tons of ammonia and 650,000 tons of urea annually.
Roberto Noronha Santos informed that the resumption of nitrogen fertilizer production in Brazil is of utmost importance for customer security and reducing dependence on imports.
The resumption of urea production by Unigel represents a crucial step for food security and self-sufficiency in the country in nitrogen fertilizers.
With rising demand and the company’s strategic vision, Brazil is moving towards a safer and more resilient future in its chemical and agricultural production.
