The New Hybrid-Electric Ship, Called Magellan Discoverer, Is Expected to Be Delivered in 2026
Chile is at the forefront of maritime engineering and sustainable tourism with the construction of the first hybrid-electric cruise ship with hybrid electric propulsion in the Americas, intended to operate in Antarctica. The ship, called Magellan Discoverer, is being built at the ASENAV shipyard, with delivery expected in 2026.
The steel-cutting ceremony for the Magellan Discoverer, held on February 8 in Valdivia, Chile, marks an important milestone for the country. The hybrid-electric ship expands on the previous construction of the Magellan Explorer, delivered in 2019, both marketed by Antarctica21, a Chilean tourism company pioneering trips to Antarctica.
Features of the Hybrid-Electric Ship Magellan Discoverer
With a gross tonnage of 6,700 tons, the Magellan Discoverer will feature a hybrid-electric propulsion system, two main engines, and MAN generator sets. Propulsion will be provided by ABB Azipod units, and the ship will have an energy storage system with a battery bank from Corvus Energy, providing smoother and quieter operation.

Cargo ship lost nearly 2,000 containers in the Pacific, scattering Crocs, helmets, electronics, batteries, ethanol, and 54 giant boxes of fireworks across the ocean.
-
For 35 years, the sea returned pieces of Garfield phones to the beaches of France until a hidden cave revealed the lost cargo of a container carried away by a storm in the 1980s.

While old buildings are often abandoned, a city in the Netherlands transformed a 1932 locomotive shed into a library with giant curtains and preserved railway memory.

A giant 3,000-ton machine had to be transported nearly 100 km in Australia because, even though it could move on its own, it might destroy its own components along the way.
The hybrid-electric ship will be 308 feet (94 meters) long, complying with the Polar PC6 ice class specifications and Tier III emission standards. With a capacity for 96 passengers, the Magellan Discoverer will offer 40 passenger cabins, including suites, deluxe cabins, and single occupancy, all with private balconies. There will be six passenger decks, including dining areas, meeting rooms, lounges, an observation bar, a gym, and a sauna, along with a unique wet science lab and a bow observation area.
Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
The hybrid-electric ship was designed to maximize its energy performance and reduce its environmental impact. The elevators will be equipped with a braking energy capture system, feeding the battery bank. All hydraulic equipment will use biodegradable oil, and the cooling system will be eco-friendly.
The Magellan Discoverer represents the emerging trend of adding luxury to the traditional exploration cruise market. Its first Antarctic program is scheduled to start in December 2026, promising a unique and sustainable experience for travelers wishing to explore the White Continent.
How Do Sustainable Ships Work?
Sustainable ships are vessels designed and operated to minimize their environmental impact and maximize energy efficiency. These ships incorporate a range of technologies and practices that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve fuel consumption efficiency, and protect marine ecosystems.
Many sustainable ships are equipped with low-emission engines or propulsion technologies powered by electric, hybrid, or solar and wind energy. Sustainable ships are designed to be more fuel-efficient through technologies such as streamlined hull designs, heat recovery systems, and speed control to optimize energy consumption.
