The Testing Phase Of The New Biomass Plant Built In MS Has Begun And Promises To Boost The Energy Industry Of The Region
In Três Lagoas, a municipality in the eastern region of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), the Onça Pintada Thermoelectric Plant, an enterprise owned by the pulp company Eldorado Brasil, has already started generating energy from eucalyptus biomass, even while still in the testing phase. According to the executive, in December about 560 people were working on the construction.

This number, however, has already reached 850 professionals at the peak of the construction. The civil and electromechanical construction works of the project are already completed. According to the company, once this commissioning phase is concluded, final tests will be conducted together with the National Electric System Operator (ONS), expected for the end of this month, and commercial activity of the plant in MS will commence.
Experts Explain How Energy Is Generated At The Biomass Plant
The raw material used by the biomass plant consists of eucalyptus stumps and roots, which are currently not utilized for pulp production. The plant uses the steam produced by the combustion of such organic materials.

The steam rotates a turbine connected to a generator that produces electricity. This allows the plant to fully utilize the eucalyptus cultivation by the company, which manufactures and sells pulp. The energy generated by the biomass plant in MS will also be sold to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
MS Plant Will Generate 50MWh
The plant will provide 50 MWh (megawatt-hours) of electric energy to the national grid. This generation has the capacity to supply a city of approximately 300,000 inhabitants, or the equivalent of almost three cities the size of Três Lagoas. The plant will consume 1,500 tons of eucalyptus biomass daily. The plant will also generate jobs for more than 100 people in MS.
According to the auction notice published by the federal government in 2016, Aneel will pay R$ 251 per megawatt produced in biomass-powered plants.
