Vivo Leverages Solar Energy Self-Production with Giant Elera in Minas Gerais.
Vivo Embraces Solar Energy
Vivo, one of the leading forces in the telecommunications market, innovates by sealing a strategic alliance with Elera Renováveis. This merger of titans is generating positive waves at the Janaúba Solar Complex in Minas Gerais, dedicating four solar parks with an impressive 237 MWp to meet a huge share – 76% to be exact – of Vivo’s energy needs.
Pioneering New Frontiers

Instability in the energy market drives investments in renewables and starts the global race for the electric transition.
With this move, Vivo not only diversifies its energy matrix but also establishes itself as a pioneer in its segment, becoming a self-producer of energy. Caio Guimarães, responsible for the management of Assets, Logistics, and Procurement at Vivo, highlights the company’s commitment to ESG practices. According to him, this initiative is perfectly aligned with Vivo’s mission to seek renewable energy and implement distributed generation plants.
In turn, Carlos Guerra from Elera emphasizes the magnitude of this joint project, which showcases a shared commitment to a greener energy transition. The recently inaugurated solar complex is a marvel of engineering and sustainability, avoiding the emission of an impressive 740,000 tons of CO2 annually.
The Advantages of Self-Production
Vivo, with its 112 million fixed and mobile accesses, has an insatiable hunger for energy. The transition to self-production alleviates dependency on energy purchases in the volatile free market and provides greater stability to the company. It is crucial to note that the Janaúba complex, spanning 3,000 hectares, features an incredible count of 2.2 million solar panels.
Vivo’s Ecological Commitment
Since 2015, Vivo has taken a proactive stance in promoting renewable energy. The company takes pride in its green footprint, having reduced its direct CO2 emissions by a remarkable 88% between 2015 and 2022. As a member of the Telefónica group, Vivo aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, involving its entire extensive value chain.
A Look at the Giants
Vivo, an entity of Telefónica Brasil, is a dominant force in the Brazilian telecommunications landscape. With the goal of “Digitalizing to Bring Closer,” it continually seeks to innovate and provide high-quality services to its customers.
On the other hand, Elera Renováveis, with a vast and diversified portfolio, is at the forefront of the renewable energy sector in Brazil. With a mission to provide clean and sustainable energy, Elera is a shining example of commitment to the environment.
