Volkswagen Scout Prepares For A New Era Of Vehicles: A Line Of Electric Pickup Trucks And SUVs, With Production Planned By Magna-Steyr In An Innovative Factory In The USA.

Volkswagen is not one of the most advanced automakers when it comes to the electric sector, however, this is expected to change with the new models developed by Magna-Steyr, which will be sold under the Volkswagen Scout brand. The plans were revealed this week by the German newspaper Kleine Zeitung.

Volkswagen Pickup And SUVs Will Receive Investments Of 450 Million Euros

According to the German portal, Volkswagen is expected to pay 450 million euros to Magna-Steyr to develop the electric pickups and SUVs that will be responsible for the relaunch of the Volkswagen Scout. The vehicles will be assembled at the VW factory that will be built in South Carolina, USA, with an investment of US$ 2 billion.

The expectation is that mass production of the Volkswagen pickup and the brand’s SUVs will begin in 2026, with 150,000 of them already available for sale in 2027, the same period for the launch of the brand’s first GTI.

The report from the German newspaper also contains other details about the Volkswagen SUVs, although it is mentioned that the models should be about 5 meters long and have a range of approximately 650 kilometers with a new Magna-Steyr platform.

The new platform is not expected to be exclusive to the Volkswagen Scout SUVs, as it can also be used in Audi’s first electric off-road vehicle, which is expected to compete directly with the Mercedes Class G (EDG), which is to be manufactured in Graz, Austria. Thus, competition among electric cars of various types is expected to increase considerably in the coming years, even reaching heavier categories such as SUVs, pickups, and off-road vehicles.

Magna Is Working On Electric SUVs For The VW Scout

Magna, the company that will develop the Volkswagen pickup, is one of the largest suppliers in the world, having already built 31 different models, totaling over four million cars. The company’s flagship is the Mercedes-Benz Class G, which it has been assembling since the late 1970s.

However, the company also manufactures the Toyota Supra / BMW Z4 duo, the Jaguar E-Pace and I-Pace, as well as the new Fisker Ocean. The German newspaper states that Magna is already working on the electric SUVs for the Volkswagen Scout, assigning tasks to engineers in Graz (AUS) and in the United States. When contacted, a spokesperson for Magna in Europe declined to provide a statement on the report by the Austrian newspaper published on November 23.

The agreement for the construction of the Volkswagen pickup is not a big surprise, as there had been rumors a year ago that VW could outsource production to Magna. VW ultimately decided to proceed independently in terms of assembly, but it seems that Magna is providing assistance in development.

Factory In South Carolina Will Create 4,000 Jobs

With an area of 1,100 acres, the future factory will be located on a larger site, approximately 1,600 acres, where more than 4,000 permanent jobs will be generated. The Volkswagen pickup and other models will be assembled on a dedicated electric platform, designed to offer reliable capacity and off-road prowess, according to a statement made some time ago by Volkswagen Scout.

It is important to highlight that the name Scout comes from the International Harvester Scout. This was an SUV produced by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980 and was ahead of many trends of modern SUVs today.

The international brand, which still manufactures trucks for the North American markets, is part of the Navistar group. This was acquired by the Traton Group, a division of the VW Group for commercial and heavy vehicles.
