Confirmed for 2026, Anti-Toro Pickup Should Be Named Volkswagen Udara, Based on T-Cross, Produced in Brazil, and Feature a Unique 1.5 Turbo Hybrid Flex Engine.
The Fiat Toro will have a new heavyweight rival in 2026. Volkswagen is preparing to launch its midsize pickup. Although the project is based on the Tarok concept presented in 2018, insider information indicates that the final name for the model should be Volkswagen Udara. The vehicle is already undergoing testing in Brazil, camouflaged. The arrival of the Volkswagen Udara is part of a significant cycle of investments by the German automaker in the country.
Goodbye Tarok? Volkswagen Udara is the Likely Name for the New VW Pickup
The name of the new Volkswagen pickup that will compete with the Fiat Toro is expected to be Volkswagen Udara. This is the name that has been used internally within the company, associated with the VW 247 project. Previously, many anticipated that the name Tarok, coming from the 2018 concept car, would be retained.
However, the name change makes strategic sense. The Tarok concept was linked to the Taos SUV and a possible production in Argentina. The Volkswagen Udara will be based on the T-Cross and manufactured in Brazil, taking on a new direction.

Updated MQB A0 Platform and Domestic Production

The new Volkswagen Udara will use an updated version of the MQB A0 platform. Although it shares the same base as the T-Cross, the architecture will be more modern and already prepared for electrification. The production of the pickup is confirmed for Brazil.
According to information from the Metalworkers’ Union of Greater Curitiba, the factory in São José dos Pinhais (PR), Volkswagen’s main facility in the country, will be responsible for assembly. Thus, Volkswagen Udara will be a domestic product, directly competing with the Toro, which is also produced here.
Unique Engine: The 1.5 Turbo Hybrid Flex Assembly
The major mechanical novelty of the Volkswagen Udara will be the debut of a unique engine in the Brazilian market. It is the 1.5 TSI Evo 2 assembly, an evolution of the current 1.4 TSI, now featuring hybrid flex technology. This new engine has a larger displacement and operates with less effort, resulting in greater fuel efficiency.
Another highlight is the adoption of a timing chain, abandoning the timing belt found in the current 1.0 and 1.4 TSI engines. The production of this hybrid flex engine will take place at Volkswagen’s factory in São Carlos (SP).
Abroad, this 1.5 engine has mild hybrid (MHEV) configurations, with a 48V battery and around 160 hp, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations, which can exceed 245 hp combined. For the Volkswagen Udara in Brazil, it is confirmed that it will be hybrid and flex.
The specific configuration (mild or plug-in, or both) has not yet been revealed. There is a possibility that the pickup will fall under the rules for IPVA exemption in São Paulo, should it utilize a hybrid flex system with an adequate battery capacity.
