Warren Buffett Has US$ 168 Billion, But Lives Simply. At 94, He Still Lives in the Same House Bought in 1958 and Avoids Typical Billionaire Luxuries
Warren Buffett is one of the richest men in the world. Even so, he lives simply and maintains habits that many would not expect from a billionaire. At 94, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway still lives in the same house he bought over 60 years ago. And despite having his fortune increased by US$ 26 billion just at the beginning of 2025, he does not seem interested in changing his lifestyle.
Buffett’s total fortune now stands at US$ 168 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This places him among the richest on the planet. However, Buffett does not live surrounded by luxury. In an interview with CBS News, he described himself as “cheap” and revealed he drives a car with a license plate that reads “ECONOMIC.”
“I’m cheap,” he admitted to CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell.

An Old House Full of Memories
The house Buffett lives in is located in Omaha, Nebraska. He bought it in 1958 for only US$ 31,500. Today, the five-bedroom, two-bathroom house is estimated to be worth US$ 1.3 million. It is 607 square meters and was built in 1921.
Even with the billions he possesses, Buffett stated that he would not trade this house for any other. For him, the memories of raising his three children there are more important than any luxury.
If he were to divide his current fortune by the value of the property, he could buy a house 129 thousand times larger. But he prefers to keep his residence simple.
Other Billionaires Make Different Choices
While Buffett chooses a more discreet life, other billionaires take very different paths. Bill Gates, for example, lives in a mansion with seven bedrooms and 24 bathrooms. The house also features an indoor pool, sauna, and even a trampoline room. Gates recently stated to The Times that he does not intend to downsize the property.
He says he enjoys the space and mentions that his children also appreciate the house. Despite not cooking or making his own bed, Gates does not see this as a problem. For him, comfort is worth it.
Elon Musk once claimed to live in a house worth US$ 50,000 near the SpaceX headquarters in Texas. However, The New York Times reported that Musk bought a family compound for US$ 35 million to accommodate his more than 12 children.
According to the publication, it is unlikely he spends much time at any of the residences, due to his obligations with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration.
The Destination of Billionaires: Sun, Sea, and Mansions
While Warren Buffett remains in Nebraska, several other billionaires have chosen to live near the sea. One example is Florida, where there is an area known as “Billionaires’ Beach.” There, names like Donald Trump and Ken Griffin appear in records of million-dollar properties. Some houses in the region are on the market for as much as US$ 88 million.
These billionaires have the freedom to choose any lifestyle. Their fortunes allow for that. And even the biggest expenses have little impact on their wealth. Luxury homes, expensive vehicles, or exclusive travels hardly change the total amount of money they have.
Buffett Prefers Discretion and Economy
Despite all this, Buffett follows another path. His decision to stay in Omaha may be linked to the lower cost of living. Compared to places like New York or Beverly Hills, living in Nebraska is more economical. And this seems to align with the billionaire’s life philosophy.
He prefers to spend only when he feels it is necessary. He does not let himself be swayed by status or appearances. Even with billions in the bank, he remains true to a quiet routine, away from the spotlight and excessive luxury.
This choice, rare among people of his wealth, shows that money does not always change who a person is. And, in Buffett’s case, what truly matters are the memories and simplicity.
