In recent years, Brazil has been standing out as a major oil exporter, accumulating consecutive historical records. In the 12-month period leading up to August, Brazilian oil exports reached an impressive US$ 61 billion, reflecting a growth of approximately 180% over the last 10 years. However, it is important to highlight that in addition to exporting, Brazil also makes significant imports of this resource.
The Brazilian surplus in the oil trade balance is noteworthy. Despite large imports, the balance was positive at US$ 34.62 billion in the 12 months leading up to August. This represents a turnaround from previous years, when the country faced substantial deficits in the oil account. Still, oil imports during the same period totaled US$ 26.32 billion, though this amount represents an 18% drop compared to the previous year.
Even with the decline, the imported volume is still substantial. Brazil needs to acquire crude oil of certain qualities to meet the demands of some local refineries. Furthermore, diesel is the most widely used fuel for cargo transportation in the country, increasing the need for imports of this derivative.

Brazil Imported US$ 9.37 Billion in Diesel From Russia, An Amount That Corresponds to 36% of the Total Oil Imports and the US Is on Alert
In the last 12 months, Brazil imported US$ 9.37 billion in diesel, an amount that corresponds to 36% of the total oil imports. Additionally, US$ 8.8 billion was spent on crude oil, US$ 2.69 billion on naphtha, and US$ 1.55 billion on gasoline, reflecting the diversity of products needed for the national market.
A fact that draws attention from the US is the growth of Russia as a supplier of oil to Brazil. Before the conflict in Ukraine, Russian participation in Brazilian oil imports was insignificant, representing less than 2%. However, after the war began in April 2022, there was a remarkable expansion in Russian oil sales to Brazil.
In concrete numbers, Russian oil exports to Brazil, mostly in the form of diesel (85%), skyrocketed from US$ 780 million in 2022 to an impressive US$ 7.47 billion in 2024. As a result, Russia’s share in Brazilian oil imports jumped from 2.7% in 2022 to a remarkable 28% in 2024.
United States Loses Its Position to Russia and Falls to Second in the Ranking of Oil Suppliers to Brazil
Despite the Russian growth, the United States remains one of the main suppliers of oil to Brazil. In the 12 months leading up to August 2024, the North American country exported around US$ 6 billion in oil, representing 22.7% of the total Brazilian imports of the product.
Another relevant player in this scenario is Saudi Arabia, which, in the last 12 months, accounted for 9% of Brazil’s oil imports.
