WhatsApp Will Stop Working on Phones with Old Versions of Android and iOS Starting October 31, 2025. See Which Models Will Be Affected and How to Prepare for the Change.
Users of old devices need to pay attention: Meta, the company responsible for WhatsApp, announced that the app will stop working on various phones with outdated operating systems starting October 31, 2025.
The decision affects those using Android and iPhone, and its main goal is to enhance user digital security.
According to the company, only devices with Android 5.1 (Lollipop) or higher and iOS 15.2 or later will continue to have access to the app’s functions after that date.

Why WhatsApp Will Stop Working on Some Phones
According to Meta, the measure seeks to ensure more protection and stability in message exchanges.
Old systems stop receiving security updates, making them more vulnerable to invasions, data theft, and performance issues.
In addition to privacy risks, the app’s performance is also hindered: crashes, slowness, and errors in sending messages tend to increase on devices without updated technical support.
This update aims to strengthen data protection, as outdated systems are more vulnerable to failures and cyberattacks.
Models That Will No Longer Have Access to WhatsApp
With the new update, a range of popular phones will become incompatible with WhatsApp.
The released list includes models from major manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, LG, Sony, and Apple.
Affected Models:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, S4 Mini, Note 2, Core, and Trend
- Motorola: Moto G (1st generation) and Moto E (2014)
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, and G2 Mini
- Sony: Xperia Z, SP, T, V, and Z2
- Apple: iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, and 6 Plus

It is worth remembering that the availability of updates may vary by country and each manufacturer’s support.
What to Do to Avoid Losing Access to the App
Those still using an old phone have two options to continue using WhatsApp: update the operating system (if the manufacturer still provides support) or switch to a new device.
Before changing phones, it is essential to make a complete backup of conversations and files.
Android users should use Google Drive, while iPhone users should save everything to iCloud.
This way, when starting WhatsApp on the new device, all messages, photos, and videos can be easily restored.
Modified Versions of WhatsApp Pose Risks
Meta also reinforced a warning about the use of unofficial apps, such as GB WhatsApp and FM WhatsApp.
These alternative versions do not have the security of the original platform and may expose users’ personal information.
Furthermore, using these apps may result in a permanent account ban, as they violate WhatsApp’s terms of service.
Meta’s decision follows a trend among large technology companies that have prioritized data security and user experience.
By discontinuing support for old versions, WhatsApp aims to ensure that communication remains protected against scams, failures, and information leaks.
Therefore, keeping the system updated is essential to continue using the app without risks.
