At Only 140 Grams, 5.84-Inch E-Ink Display, Android 14, 512 GB of Storage and Affordable Price, Xiaomi’s New E-Reader Promises to be an Alternative to Kindle in the Global Market.

Xiaomi is widely known for smartphones, smart home gadgets, and even electric scooters. But in recent years, the company has also been testing the waters in the e-reader market, traditionally dominated by Amazon and its Kindle lineup. The brand’s latest release is the Moaan InkPalm Mini Plus 2, an ultra-compact device that combines portability, advanced performance, and an open operating system. The official announcement was made in China, where the product is set to arrive in September 2025 at prices ranging from R$ 1,101 to R$ 1,186 in direct conversion.

Ultra-Compact Design: Reading in the Palm of Your Hand

The InkPalm Mini Plus 2’s main selling point is its small size. Weighing only 140 grams and 6.9 mm thick, the device can be easily stored in a jacket pocket or even in small bags.

Its 5.84-inch e-ink display features adjustable front lighting in warm and cool tones, allowing for comfortable reading in any environment — from sunlight to a dark room.
This combination positions it as a direct rival to the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis, but in an even more portable format.

Powerful Hardware for an E-Reader

Unlike many digital readers that rely on modest specifications, Xiaomi opted for a robust hardware:

  • Rockchip RK3566 Processor
  • 6 GB of RAM
  • 512 GB of internal storage

This configuration not only ensures smooth performance when opening large files, such as comics, PDFs, and magazines, but also offers virtually unlimited capacity for building personal digital libraries.
For comparison, Amazon’s basic Kindle has only 16 GB of memory, and even premium versions are around 32 GB.

Android 14: The Big Differentiator

The main selling point of the InkPalm Mini Plus 2 is that it runs a full version of Android 14, allowing the installation of third-party apps. This means that, in addition to reading e-books in standard formats, users can download apps such as:

  • Kindle (from Amazon), to access previously purchased libraries.
  • Kobo or Google Play Books, expanding reading options.
  • Platforms for audiobooks, like Audible and Storytel.
  • Productivity apps, note-taking, and even social media, if desired.

In practice, the device ceases to be just an e-reader and transforms into a versatile tool, ideal for those seeking freedom beyond closed ecosystems.

Reading Experience and Usability

Xiaomi promises that the new InkPalm Mini Plus 2 delivers a paper-like experience, thanks to the combination of the matte screen and intelligent lighting.

For students and professionals, the device can also function as a note-taking tool with stylus support, coming close to the proposals of devices like the Remarkable 2 or Boox Nova Air.
However, its main appeal still lies in extreme portability, something that sets the model apart from all the current competitors.

Aggressive Pricing Strategy

The InkPalm Mini Plus 2 will hit the Chinese market on September 22, 2025. The initial price has been set at ¥ 1,399 (R$ 1,186), but during the launch there will be a promotional discount of ¥ 1,299 (R$ 1,101).
This price range positions it as a more affordable option than Amazon and Kobo’s premium e-readers, but with specifications that even surpass them in some areas, such as storage and RAM.

Impact on the Global E-Reader Market

Although Amazon remains the absolute leader in the sector, there is room for alternatives — especially in emerging markets, where consumers are looking for cheaper and more flexible devices.
The InkPalm Mini Plus 2 could attract not only avid readers but also users who want a hybrid between a compact tablet and a dedicated e-reader.

However, Xiaomi has yet to confirm an international launch. For now, the device will only be sold in China, but analysts believe it could reach Europe and Latin America if the demand is high.

Kindle vs Xiaomi: Real Competition?

The Kindle has clear advantages: a consolidated ecosystem, integration with Amazon Prime, and a loyal base of millions of users.
On the other hand, the InkPalm Mini Plus 2 bets on innovation:

  • More memory and performance.
  • Android 14 and the freedom to install apps.
  • Ultra-compact and lightweight format.
If Xiaomi invests in global distribution, the device could finally offer a worthy competitor to the Kindle in terms of price and features.

The Future of E-Readers

The launch of the InkPalm Mini Plus 2 signals a trend: e-readers are evolving from limited devices into multifunctional platforms.
While digital reading has been synonymous with Kindle until now, Xiaomi’s move shows there is room for innovation and new formats.
For consumers, the news is positive: more competition means more options and competitive prices.
