Braskem Petrochemical Sets New Sales Record for Resins in the Brazilian Market in September
Braskem, a Brazilian petrochemical company, set a new sales record for resins in the Brazilian market in September, surpassing the historic record from August. The 367.5 tons purchased by customers last month strengthened the recovery process of resin sales, right after the setback in April and May caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In August, the petrochemical already sold 355 thousand tons, which was considered a record.

Edison Terra, Vice President of Olefins and Polyolefins at Braskem in South America, stated that “The market has been recording continuous demand increases for resins, and Braskem is working to meet its customers’ needs.” During the pandemic, Braskem was forced to reduce its plant utilization rate to 65%, which has been restored to normal use in recent months.
The highlight is the sales of polyethylene, which increased from 173 thousand tons in August to 188 thousand tons in September. Sales of renewable source polyethylene, Green PE, surpassed 17 thousand tons for the first time this month. Green PE is the plastic produced from sugarcane – a renewable raw material, while traditional polyethylene uses raw materials sourced from fossil inputs – such as oil and natural gas.

According to Edison Terra, “Green PE is the result of the combination of innovation, technology, and sustainability. Years have been dedicated to research and development, and we are proud that Braskem is now a world leader in the biopolymer market. In the United States, strong demand also brought the utilization of the region’s industrial plant back to normal. In September, the company sold more than 140 thousand tons of polypropylene in the North American market.
