Discover The World’s Largest Electric Container Ship, Greenwater 01 From China, Leading Innovation In The Maritime Industry
China has reached a significant milestone in the maritime industry with the launch of the “Greenwater 01”, the world’s largest electric container ship, operated by China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO).
This innovative ship not only represents a technological advancement in maritime transport but also a great step towards environmental sustainability.
Description Of The Ship From China
The “Greenwater 01” measures an impressive 119.8 meters in length, 23.6 meters in width, and 9 meters in depth. It is the world’s first fully electric container ship, weighing 10,000 tons, and reaches a maximum speed of 19.4 km/h. The highlight of this ship is its enormous battery capacity, which exceeds 50,000 kWh, equivalent to the energy needed to sustain several homes for an entire year.
-
A ship from China brought over 5,000 electric cars to Brazil at once: it was the largest operation ever recorded by the port, with 5,101 vehicles disembarking in Paranaguá.
-
The 17-meter, 20-ton monster that the US built in 1939 to dominate Antarctica — and that could only move by driving in reverse: the Snow Cruiser cost US$150,000 and was abandoned forever.
-
Chinese wind components arrive at the Port of Fortaleza with 76 pieces for wind turbines and continue by road to a wind farm in Rio Grande do Norte.
-
China completes the world’s largest diameter underwater tunnel under the Yellow River: 17.5 meters in diameter, two levels, six lanes, and a 163-meter TBM named Shanhe.
Battery Technology
Each battery container provides 1,600 kWh of electricity and uses a container similar to the standard 20-foot containers that the ship carries. This allows the number of battery packs to be modified according to the needs of the trip, simply by adjusting the amount of battery containers on board.

Environmental Impact
Sailing between Shanghai and Nanjing, the “Greenwater 01” from China promises to be an ecological revolution on maritime routes. It is designed to save 3,900 kg of fuel for every 100 nautical miles sailed, which translates to a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption and, consequently, carbon emissions. It is estimated that the ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 12.4 tons over the same distance traveled compared to traditional ships.
The launch of the “Greenwater 01” from China by COSCO not only sets a precedent in the maritime transport industry, but also reflects a growing commitment to sustainability and technological innovation. These advancements are crucial to combat climate change and move towards a greener and more sustainable future. The world is now watching how this electric giant from China sails toward a cleaner and more efficient horizon, marking the beginning of a new era in maritime transport.
