We Analyzed The Entry-Level 4×2 Version Of The Mid-Size Pickup. Check The Good And Bad, Price, Consumption, And Whether It’s Worth It For Your Use.

The Ford Ranger Black positions itself as the entry point to the line that holds second place among the best-selling mid-size pickups in Brazil. With a competitive price, it targets a specific consumer by forgoing a traditional item in the category: 4×4 traction. But where does it succeed and where does it fail? We analyzed its strengths and weaknesses to determine if the purchase is worth it.

Ranger Black: The Affordable Price And The Specific Target Audience

The main attraction of the Ford Ranger Black is its cost. With a price of R$ 238,900, it becomes cheaper than the entry-level versions of its main competitors. The Toyota Hilux, market leader, has its base version priced at R$ 289,000, while the Chevrolet S10 starts at R$ 277,000. Only the Fiat Titano offers a more affordable option at R$ 234,000, but it is simpler.

The pricing position is justified by the 4×2 traction. The audience for this pickup is those who need the robustness of a chassis, high ground clearance, and, mainly, a bed with high load capacity. It is for consumers who don’t tackle severe off-road trails and for whom all-wheel drive is not a necessity, becoming an unnecessary cost.

The Strengths: The Good Side Of The Entry-Level Pickup

The interior of the Ford Ranger Black stands out for its technology with digital screens and wireless connectivity, surprising for its space and comfort, despite its simple and functional finish.

Even being an entry-level version, the Ranger Black is quite complete. One of its strengths is its optical set, featuring high and low LED headlights, as well as LED DRL. It comes with 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires (ATR), side steps, rear parking sensor, and rearview camera.

The bed is a strong point. It has 1,250 liters of volumetric capacity and can carry 1,031 kg. The tailgate has a spring that assists in lifting, making it lighter. Inside, the pickup is pleasing with a 8-inch digital instrument panel, 10-inch multimedia center with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and wireless phone charger. The maintenance of the air conditioning vent for the rear seat is also a positive point. Additionally, Ford offers 5 years of warranty, even on the cheapest version.

The Weaknesses: The Bad Side And Points Of Attention

The main point of attention for the Ford Ranger Black is under the hood. Its 2.0 turbo diesel engine, called Panther, is the least powerful in its category. It delivers 170 horsepower and 41.3 kgf.m of torque, numbers lower than all its direct competitors, like the S10 (207 hp) and Hilux (204 hp). This results in merely adequate performance, with a 0 to 100 km/h in 12 seconds.

Another point is the complete absence of driver assistance systems (ADAS). Features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot alert are not available. The rear brake is drum, while the V6 versions already use discs. The key is of the folding type, without a smart system, which is understandable for an entry-level version.

Engine, Consumption, And The Surprising Driveability

Despite being the weakest engine, the 2.0 Panther has a great virtue: fuel consumption. According to Inmetro, the pickup achieves 10.2 km/l in the city and 12.1 km/l on the highway. With an 80-liter tank, the range is excellent. The transmission is a six-speed automatic and, as mentioned, the traction is only rear-wheel drive.

Where the Ranger Black impresses the most is in its ride quality. It is considered the pickup with the greatest comfort in the category, perhaps only rivaled by the Amarok. The rear leaf spring suspension is very well tuned and doesn’t “bounce”, even without load in the bed. The electric steering is light, making it pleasant for daily use in the city, despite its 5.35 meters in length.
