Bigger than Christ the Redeemer, the Christ the Protector of Encantado, in Rio Grande do Sul, reaches 37.5 meters and impresses with its grandeur, becoming a new symbol of faith, tourism, and Brazilian regional pride
When talking about a large statue of Jesus in Brazil, the first name that usually comes to mind is Christ the Redeemer, in Rio de Janeiro, with its outstretched arms and breathtaking view from the top of Corcovado. A national symbol and an icon of Brazilian tourism, the Rio monument is one of the most well-known representations of Jesus Christ in the world.
However, Christ the Redeemer is no longer the largest monument of Jesus in the country. This title belongs to Christ the Protector, located in the city of Encantado, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, about 140 kilometers from Porto Alegre.
Christ the Protector: A Monumental Work in the Taquari Valley
Recently inaugurated, Christ the Protector impresses both with its height and the grandeur of its presence amidst the landscape of the Taquari Valley.

Heading to Brazil in a Bonanza F33 single-engine aircraft: a couple departs from Florida on a visual flight, makes technical stops in the Caribbean to refuel and organize paperwork, and begins the staged crossing until they reach the country.
The statue measures 37.5 meters tall, excluding the pedestal — that is, it is 7.5 meters taller than Christ the Redeemer, which is 30 meters.
When including the base, the Rio monument reaches 38 meters, but still falls short of the gaucho sculpture in terms of figure dimensions.
Thus, according to data from the Diário do Litoral portal, Christ the Protector has become the tallest statue of Jesus Christ in the world in total sculpture height, surpassing iconic representations scattered around the globe.
Only when considering the height added to the pedestal does Christ the King, located in Poland, remain the tallest, at 52.5 meters.
Even so, the Encantado monument has gained international prominence for its size and visual impact.
The creation is by the Cearan artist Markus Moura, who dedicated years to the project until the completion of the work.
The effort brought together local teams and significant public mobilization, consolidating the monument as a symbol of faith and regional pride.
Tourism, Faith, and Experience
Currently, Christ the Protector is the main tourist attraction in Encantado. Visits take place from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 AM to 5 PM, without a lunch break, remaining closed only on national holidays.
One of the most sought-after attractions is the internal viewpoint, located at the heart of the statue. This space allows for a panoramic view of the Taquari Valley and provides a unique experience to visitors who climb up there.
Tickets are sold on-site and on the official website. The prices are: adults from 13 to 59 years old, R$ 40; seniors and children from 8 to 12 years old, R$ 20; residents of Encantado, R$ 20; children up to 7 years old do not pay. Access to the viewpoint costs an additional R$ 50, with exclusive sales at the official store.
How to Get to the Statue
Christ the Protector is located on Linha Garibaldi, in the rural area of Encantado.
The access is signposted, and the site’s structure is expanding, aiming to accommodate more and more visitors from Brazil and abroad, attracted by one of the newest and grandest monumental works in the country.
