While Macaé Organizes for the Public Hearing of TEPOR (Port Terminal), It Receives Authorization Regarding the Privatization of Its Airport
On November 5 (Monday), President Michel Temer authorized the approval of airport concessions throughout the country, including the Macaé Airport in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The determination was published in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) with approval for the concession as an operational exploration modality for the next 30 years.
Called the National Privatization Program (PND) for airports, which has been provided for in legislation since last year, it is part of the Investment Partnership Program (PPI). Due to the short time frame related to the election year that worried the Macaé city hall, the municipal government was still able to organize itself along with the state and federal governments to expedite the process and keep the airport within the Southeast block, despite the considerations of the Governor of Espírito Santo, Mr. Paulo Hartung, as the Vitória Airport heads the block.
Fundamental to the concession processes, the blocks will practically serve as packages of airports divided into the Northeast, Central-West, and Southeast blocks, reaching around 7 million passengers. With private capital investment and the consequent revitalization, modernization, and expansion of the airports, the expectation is that this process will begin to generate thousands of jobs for next year (2019).

Macaé, which closely monitors the entire licensing process for the works of the new TEPOR (Port Terminal), seeks another solution for what has been considered one of the city’s logistical problems (BR-101, port, and airport), with a public hearing scheduled for today (7) at 7 PM regarding TEPOR.
Today, the Macaé Airport is undergoing runway renovations, in addition to the works that have already been carried out regarding its structure, receiving only helicopter flights for offshore companies. Since 2015, it has not received any commercial passenger flights, which at the time were operated by Azul Linhas Aéreas with ATR 42 aircraft that were replaced by larger ATR 72 aircraft with a higher passenger transport capacity, but are considered too heavy for the airport’s runway.
The expected delivery of the airport is set for mid-2019, and the expectation is that the ATR 72 models will be able to return to operate at the airport, and with the progress of the permit, a new runway renovation would be necessary for larger aircraft to also use the airport, such as Airbus A310 and Boeing 737, used in the Rio-São Paulo air bridge.
The hope now is that with the achievements of the new port and the new airport, the municipality of Macaé becomes even more attractive to the oil and gas industry, restoring and increasing its prominence as the national capital of oil.
