During a renovation in Piracicaba, a couple discovered a secret underground room that was hidden behind a wall. Check out the details of this discovery.
A strong smell of mold and a door locked by an old padlock were the first signs of a surprising discovery in a property in Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo, in July 2025. After living in the residence for 18 months, the couple, formed by architect Carolina Reyes and athlete Rafael Rey, found a secret room hidden in the basement.
The couple only realized the existence of the room when they noticed that a wall blocked a passage indicated in the property documents. Upon tearing down the masonry barrier during a renovation, they found a staircase leading to a completely isolated environment.
What was hidden beneath the house’s floor?
Upon entering the place for the first time, the residents realized that the space had originally been designed to be a wine cellar. The environment had been untouched for so long that even the previous owners didn’t seem to use it.

“We ended up discovering that we have another room in the house, and it has been closed for years. Upon opening the wall, they came face to face with a staircase leading to a locked door. When we opened it, it smelled of mold. The room is a wine cellar,” Carolina reported on her social media.

The technical analysis that revealed the couple’s secret room in Piracicaba
The discovery of the secret room was not by chance, but rather the result of Carolina’s professional curiosity. As an architect, she decided to review the property’s technical documents during the planning of a renovation.
It was at that moment that she realized the floor plan did not correspond to what she physically saw in the house every day.
In a video published on Instagram, she explained the initial realization: “We discovered a hidden room in the basement of our house. It’s an old house. I’m an architect, and when I looked at the floor plan, I saw that there was another staircase in the house. But we didn’t know that other staircase existed.”
This inconsistency between paper and reality motivated the couple to break down the wall and investigate the mystery. Now that the mystery has been solved and the space revealed, the owners are enthusiastic about the possibilities the new room offers.
The residence renovation project has been expanded to include the revitalization of the old wine cellar, which is expected to gain a new function in the daily routine of the architect and the athlete.
“Since we discovered another room in the house, we will now renovate it. It has potential,” said Carolina, demonstrating that the place will cease to be a forgotten storage area and become a useful environment.
