The Starbase, home of SpaceX and a visionary project by Elon Musk, has been officially recognized as a city in the southern Texas, in the United States. The decision was approved in a vote held last Saturday, where the transformation of the area into a city received 212 votes in favor and only 6 against, according to the Cameron County Elections Department. The local population, predominantly made up of SpaceX employees, voted en masse to validate the new city.
The Strategic Importance of Starbase
Located near the border with Mexico, Starbase is not just a galactic name; it is the operations and launch center for SpaceX‘s space program. The company, which has contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA, plans to send astronauts back to the Moon and, eventually, to Mars. The region already hosts rocket tests and launches, and being officialized as a city will facilitate the expansion of SpaceX’s operations.
The idea of creating Starbase was presented by Musk in 2021, and the approval of the new city was already expected. Musk celebrated the decision on his social network, X, stating that “Starbase is now a real city!”. Challenges of Municipal Control and Community Concerns
Although SpaceX has garnered significant support from local authorities for job creation and investments, the establishment of an official city has raised concerns about the control that Elon Musk may exert in the region. Specifically, there are fears about the possibility of Musk closing a beach and a state park during rocket launches, which would affect local community access.
The city, which occupies about 3.9 square kilometers and is made up of trailers and modest houses, may see an increase in the frequency of launches. SpaceX is seeking permission to increase the number of launches from five to 25 per year, which could intensify access restrictions to the beach and the park. Additionally, the possibility of transferring the responsibility for closing the beach from the county to the new municipal administration has sparked heated debates.
The Administration of the New City and Its Implications
The general manager of Starbase, Kathryn Lueders, requested a vote on the municipal issue in 2024, stating that the company already manages roads and utilities in the area, in addition to providing “education and healthcare” to residents. However, critics argue that the power to close the beach should remain with the county government, which represents a broader population that uses these recreational spaces.
Representatives of SpaceX stated that granting the city the authority to close the beach would accelerate launches. However, many residents are concerned that the company’s interests may overshadow community rights. The Cameron County judge, Eddie Trevino Jr., noted that the county has been working well with SpaceX and that there is no need for changes in the current administration.
Protests and the Fight for Public Access Preservation
The South Texas Environmental Justice Network organized protests against the vote that resulted in the creation of Starbase as a city. During a demonstration, Josette Hinojosa, who has taken her daughter to the beach for generations, expressed concern about ensuring continuous access to this space. “Some days it’s closed, and other days you are turned away,” she said, referring to the restrictions imposed by the launches.
Additionally, organizer Christopher Basaldú, a member of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation of Texas, highlighted the historical importance of the area for his ancestors, where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico. The tensions between the need for SpaceX‘s development and the concerns of the local community reflect a broader debate about the balance between technological progress and the preservation of the rights and access of the population.
