German Company Will Supply Clean Energy to AWS, Which in Exchange Will Offer Cloud and AI Services to Optimize Energy Operations.
The German energy company RWE and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a strategic partnership on Thursday (12/6). The agreement links the transition to renewable energy with digital transformation. RWE will supply carbon-free electricity to AWS data centers. In return, Amazon will provide advanced cloud services to the German company.
Strategic Exchange: Renewable Energy for Cloud Computing Services
The collaboration stipulates that RWE directs its electricity production from clean sources to power Amazon Web Services data centers. In return, AWS will provide RWE with its cloud service solutions. The goal is to drive the energy company’s digitalization journey, including the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics.
A Partnership Built on Previous Renewable Energy Agreements
This new agreement does not come out of nowhere. It is based on a previous business relationship between the two giants. Amazon and RWE had already signed seven power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the United States. Together, these agreements total a capacity of 1.1 GW, derived from renewable wind and solar energy facilities.

How AWS Drives RWE’s Digital Transformation
The partnership deepens after RWE successfully migrated mission-critical applications to the AWS cloud. This migration included its renewable energy trading and risk management platform. The result was a 30% improvement in performance with faster execution times. AWS technologies will continue to support RWE’s innovation in trading and asset optimization.
The Future of Collaboration: Artificial Intelligence and Optimization
The future of collaboration focuses on innovation. AI applications for the renewable energy sector will be one of the focuses. The partnership will also strengthen ties with RWE’s AI Research Laboratory in Seattle. The goal is to accelerate the development of forecasting models using advanced AI. To achieve this, the great computational power and elasticity of the AWS cloud will be leveraged.
