New unit marks the direct arrival of Macromix to the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, expands Unidasul’s expansion and strengthens the competition in Porto Alegre’s food retail

One of the traditional retail addresses in Porto Alegre is about to change operations after months of being closed. The property that previously operated under the Nacional brand, linked to the Carrefour Group, is undergoing renovation to receive a new unit of Macromix, a wholesale chain managed by the Rio Grande do Sul holding company Unidasul.

The move represents the direct arrival of Macromix in Porto Alegre. Additionally, it expands Unidasul’s presence in one of the main consumer markets in Rio Grande do Sul. The replacement in the property does not mean Carrefour’s exit from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, but rather a change in operation at the location previously occupied by Nacional.

Macromix arrives in Porto Alegre with super wholesale model

The opening of the new store is considered strategic by Unidasul. The group already operates in several cities in Rio Grande do Sul, but Porto Alegre did not yet have a direct presence of Macromix Atacado.

In this context, the company is betting on the model called super wholesale. The proposal, according to the company, combines competitive prices with common services in traditional retail. The unit is expected to feature its own bakery, confectionery, butcher, and fresh produce with frequent supply.

The strategy does not aim to compete solely on price. Unidasul intends to offer a more complete experience to the consumer, combining savings, convenience, and variety in the same space.

Unidasul bets on expansion and forecasts R$ 410 million by 2029

Headquartered in Esteio, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Unidasul currently operates 48 stores in 25 cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Of this total, there are 34 Rissul brand units and 14 Macromix Atacado stores.

The group employs more than 7,500 workers and records an annual revenue of close to R$ 3.8 billion. Thus, the arrival of Macromix in the capital reinforces an important stage of the growth plan.

In the coming years, the company intends to accelerate expansion. The plan foresees R$ 410 million in investments by 2029. Of this amount, R$ 350 million will be allocated to the opening of new units. Another R$ 60 million will be dedicated to the modernization and retrofit of current stores.

The goal, therefore, is to open about five new units per year.

Group was born from family retail in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul

The trajectory of Unidasul began in family businesses in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2006, the merger between Comercial Unida and Comercial Rissul gave rise to the group in its current configuration.

Over the years, the company expanded its logistical and productive structure. In 2020, Unidasul inaugurated a distribution center in Esteio. The company also began operating its own bakery units and created an internal transportation system.

The company started buying fresh produce directly from producers. With this, it seeks to maintain daily supply, reinforce the perception of freshness, and sustain the quality standard in the stores.

Retail in Rio Grande do Sul gains a new chapter with the arrival of Macromix

The entry of Macromix at the former Nacional location occurs amid the advancement of the wholesale format in Brazilian consumption. In the case of Unidasul, the bet combines scale, own services, and a consolidated regional operation.

The property previously linked to Carrefour becomes part of a new commercial strategy. The arrival in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul also places Macromix in an important showcase of food retail.

With investments planned until 2029, its own structure, and planned expansion, Unidasul tries to strengthen its presence in Porto Alegre. After all, in an increasingly competitive market, who will be able to balance price, convenience, and experience to win over the consumer in Rio Grande do Sul?
