After an investment of R$ 243 million in steel production lines during the year 2021, Aperam is opening a new round of investments and will allocate a total of R$ 588 million in Brazil. According to comments from the company made last Tuesday (05/24), the capital will be directed to the Timóteo plant in Minas Gerais and Aperam Bioenergia, focusing on steel and charcoal production.
New Investment Plan by Aperam Will Focus on Expanding Steel Production at the Timóteo Plant and Charcoal Exploration by Aperam Bioenergia
Aperam is the largest producer of stainless steel in all of Latin America and, after a total investment of R$ 243 million for updating stainless steel and electrical steel lines last year, the company is charting new directions for the national market. This is because it announced a new round of even bolder investments in the country and will allocate R$ 588 million to Brazilian steel and charcoal production.
Thus, the R$ 588 million investments will be directed towards technological upgrades in hot rolling at the Timóteo (MG) plant to improve steel production and Aperam Bioenergia, which produces charcoal in the Jequitinhonha Valley region.
The announcements regarding the new round of investments by Aperam in Brazil were made last Tuesday at the Administrative City, the seat of the government of Minas Gerais, in the presence of Governor Romeu Zema and other representatives of the Minas Gerais state administration.
Within the R$ 588 million to be invested nationally, the company will focus on acquiring a new boiler and modernizing all electrical and automation aspects involved in the steel production process at the Timóteo plant. Regarding charcoal production, Aperam Bioenergia, the subsidiary responsible for resource exploration, will receive investments to focus on sustainability and ESG practices within national production. With this, Aperam aims to reinforce its environmental commitment with even greater productivity in its operations in the state of Minas Gerais.
Company Reinforces Its Commitment to the Development of the State of Minas Gerais and the Importance of Enterprises for the Mining Region
The production of steel and charcoal in the state of Minas Gerais are currently the main focuses of Aperam in the national territory, due to the high potential for profitability for the company. Thus, during the year 2021, a cycle of investments of R$ 243 million was initiated in Minas, aimed at modernizing the plant and sustainability in the production of green steel. Now, the company reinforces its commitment to the state and continues expanding investments in the Timóteo plant and Aperam Bioenergia.
In this context, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, celebrated the new investment by Aperam in the state and emphasized that “It is an even greater satisfaction to participate in this announcement because Aperam is a company that has done its homework. We signed the Race to Zero and were at COP 26 formalizing a commitment to reduce carbon emissions. What Aperam has already done is what all companies in Minas will have to do in the coming decades: zero their carbon emissions.”
Finally, the company stated that the round of investments in Aperam’s steel and charcoal production is expected to continue until the year 2024, when the company will complete the allocation of R$ 588 million for improvements within the state of Minas Gerais.
