New Gasoline Engine From Cummins Revolutionizes Company Engineering: With 300 HP of Power, It Redefines a Century of Innovation and Promises High Performance
Cummins is one of the leading manufacturers of diesel engines in the United States and has a long history in developing propulsion systems for heavy vehicles. The company equips trucks from various American brands, offering highly reliable and efficient engines in a market where customers can choose from options such as Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar. In addition, Cummins supplies the engines for the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, widely seen on Brazilian roads.
However, the automotive sector is undergoing significant transformations, driven by new demands for efficiency, sustainability, and fuel diversification. In response to these changes, Cummins is developing a gasoline engine, an unprecedented step for the company, which has historically excelled in diesel engines. In this article, we will explore the details of this new technology, its impact on the industry, and how it may redefine the future of internal combustion engines.
New Gasoline Engine From Cummins Has Been in Development Since 2023
The manufacturer has developed gas and even hydrogen variants over the years; however, after 106 years, it introduced its first gasoline-powered engine, recently launched. Initially developed for tractors, Cummins’ new engine will be exclusive to Kenworth brand trucks, named B6.7 Octane.

Hyundai sells an executive minivan that looks like a VIP room on wheels: Custin carries 7 people, uses a 1.5 turbo engine with 168 hp, 8-speed automatic transmission, and costs around R$ 157,000 in direct conversion in Vietnam.

The 7-seater Toyota that seems too cheap to exist in Brazil: Rush has a 1.5 engine, manual or automatic option, and a converted price close to R$ 81,000, while here families need to aim for much more expensive SUVs.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Dakar diesel shows 314,000 km and still draws attention for its reputation for durability; the seven-seater 4×4 SUV handles trails, but signs of severe use may conceal losses for used car buyers.

Peugeot publicly acknowledged the errors of the PureTech engine, which caused serious failures in hundreds of thousands of cars, and introduced the new Turbo 100 as a definitive solution, a 1.2 turbo tested for over 3 million kilometers that replaces the faulty belt with a more durable chain.
The model has been in development since 2023 and derives from a 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine, the same used in the aforementioned Ram pickups.
According to the company, this is a solution that combines the durability of diesel engines with the simplicity of gasoline technology. Less demanding in terms of emission control, Cummins’ new gasoline engine has a declared maximum power of 305 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 91.3 kgfm. In the United States, diesel engines still dominate the traffic segment; however, their operating costs have been rising significantly, just like environmental pressure in some American states.
Cummins Engine Will Use Multiple Fuels
Some regions have had to ban diesel vehicles due to stricter emission standards, such as California and New Mexico, for example.
Part of Cummins’ HELM project, which seeks to provide customers with various fuel options on a single platform, Cummins’ new gasoline engine can be configured to run on diesel, LPG, gasoline, CNG, or hydrogen. According to the company, maintenance will be similar to that of a traditional gasoline engine, and fuel economy is expected to be approximately 10% higher compared to others of the same size, using 87 octane gasoline.
By opting for the new gasoline engine from Cummins, the need for complex and costly emission control systems is eliminated, such as the diesel particulate filter (DPF) or Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, which involve the use of AdBlue.
Furthermore, Cummins’ new engine simplifies logistics for companies and reduces operational costs. Even with all these benefits, the engine goes beyond and already meets the American CARB and EPA standards, equivalent to Euro 7 in the European Union, which come into effect in 2027.
B6.7 Breaks Records with Hydrogen
In addition to gasoline, Cummins’ new B6.7 engine also uses fuels like hydrogen and promises to revolutionize the industry. The model is still in the prototype phase, operating with water and emitting only water vapor. The 15-liter engine has been developed to deliver exceptional power and torque.
With a minimum power of 294 and a maximum of 500 HP and torque of up to 1200 Nm, Cummins’ new engine is ideal for heavy trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles. These figures are comparable to those of a traditional diesel engine but have the advantage of not emitting polluting gases.
