After Mortal Attack in Kiev, Trump Makes Direct Appeal to Putin for Ceasefire and Change in Tone of War, While Zelensky and EU Reinforce Criticism of Russia

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, condemned the Russian bombings in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, in the early hours of this Thursday, 24. The action resulted in the death of at least nine people and injured another 70. It was the deadliest attack on the city since July of the previous year.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump made a direct appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “It was not necessary, and it happened at a terrible moment. Vladimir, STOP! Five thousand soldiers a week are dying. Let’s conclude this peace deal!”, wrote the Republican.

This statement marks a different tone compared to Trump’s previous remarks, where he had shown understanding of Russia’s interest in reaching a peaceful agreement.

Since the beginning of talks between the countries, the American leader had maintained that Moscow wanted an end to the conflict, despite warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials.

During the attack, Russia used drones and ballistic missiles in Kiev for hours. The severity of the bombing forced Zelensky to cancel his official visit to South Africa and return to Ukraine.

In a speech, he recalled that, 44 days ago, he accepted a ceasefire proposal made by the United States to try for an agreement, but stated that the Russian attacks continued.

The European Union also reacted. Kaja Kallas, head of Foreign Relations of the bloc, declared on social media that “while claiming to seek peace, Russia launched a deadly airstrike against Kiev.”

For her, this behavior shows that Moscow does not actually seek an agreement, but rather to prolong the conflict. Thursday’s offensive reinforced tensions and international calls for an immediate ceasefire.
