Partnership Between Italy, United Kingdom, and Japan May Gain Saudi Support for GCAP Fighter Project.

Saudi Arabia may be the newest member of the GCAP fighter project, a partnership between Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan for the development of an advanced next-generation fighter. The information was confirmed on Wednesday (29) by Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani.

“The agreement we have with the United Kingdom and Japan… I believe will now be expanded to include Saudi Arabia,” Tajani stated during a press conference. The declaration comes after recent meetings among leaders of these countries, including a conversation in Brazil between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, and British counterpart, Keir Starmer.

Saudi Arabia Joins the Game: GCAP Fighter Project Could Exceed US$ 50 Billion with New Partner
Leading industry companies, such as Leonardo, BAE Systems, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, are at the forefront of development, combining global expertise. The goal is to produce an agile, stealthy, and efficient aircraft capable of facing future threats.

The GCAP fighter project (Global Combat Air Program, in English) was officially launched in December 2022 and represents one of the largest collaborations in the global defense industry. It unites the efforts of the three nations to create a next-generation combat aircraft, which is expected to be ready to fly within the next decade.

In addition to technological advancements, Saudi Arabia’s entry may bring significant economic impact. Reuters had already pointed out the country as a strong candidate for a secondary partnership, capable of injecting financial resources into the project and providing a strategic market for the fighter.

Renowned companies such as Leonardo, BAE Systems, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are leading the developments of the GCAP fighter project, which is expected to cost tens of billions of dollars. With Saudi inclusion potentially on the horizon, the collaboration is expected to reach new heights, further strengthening international ties in the defense sector.

The arrival of Saudi Arabia in the GCAP fighter project will be an important milestone for military aviation and for the strategic relations between these countries. The next steps of the agreement should be closely monitored, as this partnership promises to shape the future of the global defense industry.
