In Partnership With ArcelorMittal, BNDES Announces Unprecedented Record With New Financing for Wind Power Generation Park
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has just announced a historic operation: a record financing of R$ 3.2 billion for the Babilônia Centro wind complex, resulting from the partnership between Casa dos Ventos and the steel giant ArcelorMittal. This is the largest operation of its kind ever carried out by BNDES, marking a new chapter in the pursuit of a more sustainable energy matrix in Brazil, according to the website Petronotícias.
The Babilônia Centro wind complex, located in the municipalities of Morro do Chapéu and Várzea Nova in Bahia, will be a milestone in renewable energy generation in the country. With 123 wind turbines and an installed capacity of 553.5 MW, the project will be able to generate around 267 average MW of energy, representing a significant increase in the supply of clean energy.
Furthermore, the wind complex with investments from BNDES will play a fundamental role in supplying ArcelorMittal in Brazil, being responsible for providing approximately 40% of the company’s electricity consumption. This agreement also marks the largest corporate renewable energy contract ever signed in the country, consolidating ArcelorMittal’s position as one of the leaders in sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Saudi Arabia is building in Oxagon a US$ 8.4 billion mega green hydrogen plant with 4 GW of solar and wind energy, 5.6 million solar panels, and capacity to produce 600 tons per day, transforming the desert into one of the planet’s largest clean fuel factories.
Economic and Social Impact of ArcelorMittal’s New Wind Park
The implementation of ArcelorMittal’s Babilônia Centro wind complex will not only boost the country’s energy capacity but will also have a significant impact on the local economy. It is estimated that during the implementation phase of the project, 1,500 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs will be created. After completion, the complex is expected to maintain 80 employees directly, in addition to generating indirect opportunities for another 150 workers.
Lucas Araripe, executive director of Casa dos Ventos, emphasized the importance of investments in renewable energies for the local economy, highlighting that such projects have a positive impact on job creation and the sustainable development of the regions where they are implemented.
Commitment to Sustainability
The operation also reinforces BNDES’s commitment to large-scale projects aimed at a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix for Brazil. Aloizio Mercadante, president of the development bank, highlighted that the operation is aligned with the pursuit of a more sustainable energy matrix, contributing to the decarbonization and production of clean energy in the country.
For his part, Jefferson De Paula, president of ArcelorMittal Brazil and CEO of Long Steel and Mining LATAM, emphasized that the Babilônia Centro wind complex with investments from BNDES is an important step toward achieving the company’s global goals regarding carbon neutrality and emission reduction, reinforcing the company’s commitment to a sustainable future.
Expected to begin operations in October 2025, the Babilônia Centro wind complex represents not only an advance in Brazil’s energy capacity but also a milestone in the pursuit of cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. BNDES’s record investment signals a growing trend of financing for large-scale renewable generation projects, consolidating the country as a leader in the clean energy sector.
