The Argentine government is about to approve a lifetime driver's license, ending the obligation for periodic renewals and eliminating associated costs.
Imagine never having to worry about renewing your driver's license again? Well, that's the revolutionary proposal which is about to be approved in the Argentina. The new lifetime driver's license promises to eliminate the headache and frequent renewal costs, transforming the process into something completely digital and free. But how will this work in practice?
The current driver's license renewal system in Argentina It is known for being complicated and expensive, something that many Brazilians also face. At each determined period, which varies depending on the city, drivers are required to pass a series of tests and pay fees to continue driving legally. But this could change radically with a bill that is about to be approved.
Lifetime driver's license in Argentina
In July, congresswoman Patricia Vásquez presented a proposal which, if approved, will transform the driver's license into a “lifetime” document for non-professional drivers. The idea is that, once the license is obtained, it will no longer be necessary to renew it periodically. Instead, the driver will only need to submit an online declaration every five years confirming that they are still physically fit to drive. And the best: all this at no cost!

What changes with the new law
The new law project that seeks to establish the lifetime driver's license na Argentina proposes three main changes:
End of validity for non-professional drivers: The proposal is that licenses for non-professional drivers no longer have an expiration date. Only every five years, the driver must submit a sworn declaration of psychophysical fitness, certified by an accredited doctor.
National register of accredited doctors: To guarantee the suitability of the process, a national register of doctors capable of issuing these certificates will be created. This would prevent fraud and ensure that only trained professionals can evaluate drivers.
Changes to the national traffic law: The changes include the obligation to enter the dates of the first concession and the last modifications to the portfolio. Furthermore, the suspension of the right to drive will be automatic if the driver does not comply with the requirements for sending the sworn statement.
When does the change take effect?
The Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger, has already made it clear that the official announcement must be made in the next weeks. Although the legislative process has its stages, Sturzenegger's words suggest that approval is imminent. If everything goes as planned, drivers in Argentina will be able to say goodbye to renovations soon.
Comparing with Brazil
Meanwhile, in Brazil, the scenario is very different. Here, driver's license renewal is mandatory every 10 years for drivers under 50 years old, and every 5 years for those between 50 and 70 years old. Above 70, renewal is every 3 years. Not to mention that the costs involved in the process are not low.
In some states, such as São Paulo, to renew their driver's license, drivers face a series of costs that add up to a considerable amount. The first expense is the medical examination fee, which must be paid directly at the clinic and costs R$ 116,69. Then, if necessary, there is psychological assessment fee, also paid at the clinic, in the amount of R$ 136,14. Finally, there is the fee for issuing the renewal and sending the driver's license by mail, which leaves for R$ 127,69.
The difference is stark: while the Argentina moves towards a more practical and economical system, in Brazil, drivers continue to face bureaucracy and recurring expenses. This change in Argentina It can serve as an example for other nations seeking to modernize and reduce bureaucracy in their qualification processes.
We keep an eye on the Argentine government’s next steps. If everything goes well, the lifetime driver's license it could become a reality and forever change the way Argentines see the licensing process. Comment on whether this new law would be a good idea in Brazil.
