Archeologists In Germany Discover The “Ice Prince”, Baby Buried With Rare Silk, Silver Bracelets, And Advanced Preservation Techniques
In Southern Germany, archeologists from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD) found the remains of a boy approximately one and a half years old. The excavation was carried out near the town of Mattsies. The boy, nicknamed the “Ice Prince”, lived between 670 and 680 A.D.
The body was in a stone burial chamber, accompanied by various valuable objects. To preserve the structure and remove the contents without damage, specialists used a special technique.
They froze the block of earth with liquid nitrogen for 14 hours. The thermal shock process kept the entire area intact, which was taken to a restoration workshop near the town of Bamberg.

Analyses Reveal Characteristics Of The Boy
DNA tests indicated that the Ice Prince had blue eyes and light hair. Additionally, strontium isotope analyses showed that he was breastfed until the time of his death.
Despite the protection offered by breast milk, the boy died from an ear infection, a chronic condition common in the pre-modern era.
The burial chamber was sealed with lime mortar, something unusual for the period. Inside, furniture, food, and luxurious adornments were found.
The boy wore a long-sleeved linen tunic, decorated with a silk ribbon. This material was rare in the region and usually came from trade with the Byzantine Empire.
Shoes With Spurs And Silver Bracelets
In addition to the tunic, the Ice Prince wore trousers, silver bracelets on his arms, and leather shoes with silver Spurs. The presence of these items reinforces the social standing of the family to which the boy belonged.
The discovery offers a rare glimpse into the funeral customs and the lives of elite children in Bavaria over a millennium ago.
