Food Prices Are Inflated In The United States And Experts Point Out That The Scenario May Get Worse
The inflation is affecting various countries around the world, including the United States of America (USA). One item in particular has drawn attention due to its rising prices: chicken wings. Very popular among Americans, this is just one of the food items that has already exceeded US$ 30 and is alarming the population. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, inflation reached 8.5% in March 2022, marking the highest rate in 41 years.
However, that’s not all. Some experts say that the scenario may worsen significantly, which is concerning for Americans and local traders. A gallon of milk, widely consumed there, has seen a 25% increase since the start of the pandemic. Additionally, bacon has also become 35% more expensive compared to 2019. Nevertheless, even with these exorbitant prices, the population has been shielded from even more catastrophic increases due to the true “juggling” by local merchants, which may change in the coming months.

Inflation is the result of various factors, among which is the war in Ukraine. One of the most affected sectors, besides fuels, is the food industry. Lula scraps the blouse tax, and international purchases up to US$50 are exempt from federal tax, but ICMS is still on the radar.
He reported to Money Times that 18 months ago, 18 kilos of chicken wings, equivalent to 40 pounds, could be bought for US$ 85. However, due to the rise in food prices, it can now cost over US$ 150. Additionally, the price of cooking oil and flour has almost doubled in the last six months and are staples for the restaurant.
According to him, maintenance costs have risen due to fuel prices. Unfortunately, to cope with this increase, he had to raise the prices of the dishes offered on the menu. For example, the chicken wing dish was sold for US$ 13.95 before the pandemic. Now, the price may vary according to market conditions, reaching between US$ 27.95 and US$ 34. As a result, Good is considering removing chicken wings from the menu.
Not Passing Along The Cost Of Food To Consumers Will Be Much More Difficult Going Forward, According To Experts.
Merchants, especially in the food sector, have managed to mitigate the effects of inflation on American plates. However, this will become increasingly difficult going forward, or even impossible. After all, the increase in food costs for restaurant dishes and maintenance services directly impacts budgets and value-added.
In April, a 9.4% increase in food prices was recorded in the USA, compared to April 2021. This rate had already been 8.5% in March and was considered the highest in 41 years, and now it has broken that record. The main food items affected were chicken, seafood, and baby food. Furthermore, Americans witnessed a 220% increase in egg prices, 51% for butter, 41% for oils, and 40% for flour, according to data from the National Restaurant Association.
However, food prices rose an average of 18% compared to 2021. This concerns Americans and creates a horizon of uncertainties, with the burden of inflation increasing and no indication of relief.
