One of the Busiest Highways in Southern Brazil Now Has 40 New Fixed Radars. The Goal Is to Increase Safety and Reduce Accidents, but the Measure Is Already Causing Polemic Among Drivers.
If you’re used to driving on busy highways, pay attention: a significant change is about to impact the traffic on BR-101, especially on the Contorno Viário of Greater Florianópolis.
Behind the scenes of this movement, a new measure is being prepared that promises to cause a stir among drivers.
What’s happening? Something that can directly affect the pocket of those who do not respect the rules.

The installation and activation of new fixed radars at strategic points along BR-101 is bound to be the most talked-about subject among drivers passing through this region.
As announced by the Federal Highway Police (PRF), these new features could transform the experience of traveling there.
But what are the details that make this big news for those driving in this area? Find out now.
The Activation on the Contorno Viário
As announced by the PRF last Monday (25), 40 new fixed radars will gradually be activated along the Contorno Viário of Greater Florianópolis until Friday, the 29th.
The responsibility for the installation and management of the equipment was assigned to the concessionaire Arteris Litoral Sul, which manages this stretch of the highway.
According to disclosed information, the devices have been properly calibrated by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), ensuring accuracy in measurements.
This means that speed recordings will be precise, and fines will be applied based on reliable data, minimizing possible errors.
The concession of these radars is part of an effort to improve road safety and prevent accidents on one of the busiest and most important highways in southern Brazil.
However, the measure also divides opinions among drivers, who see the initiative as a mix of advancement and challenge.
Why Is the Contorno Viário of Greater Florianópolis So Important?
The Contorno Viário of Greater Florianópolis is a crucial alternative to divert heavy traffic that crosses the urban center of Florianópolis.
Its importance lies in the fact that it is one of the main road corridors connecting the south to the southeast of the country, catering to both cargo transportation and the flow of tourists and residents.
Despite this, the segment has suffered for years from issues related to excessive vehicles and a high accident rate.
The installation of radars aims to mitigate these problems by imposing strict speed limits that vary based on vehicle type:
- 100 km/h for light vehicles, such as passenger cars;
- 80 km/h for heavy vehicles, including trucks and buses.
These limits, although defined based on technical studies, generate doubts and complaints among drivers who use the road daily.
The Impact of Radars on Traffic
The implementation of radars on highways is always controversial. For many drivers, they represent a tool of enforcement that guarantees safety while causing discomfort.
According to experts, the benefits of speed controllers include:
- Reduction of accidents: Studies indicate that monitored highways have fewer serious occurrences;
- Greater traffic flow: Uniformity in speeds decreases congestion in critical stretches;
- Environmental protection: Speed control can reduce the emission of polluting gases.
However, critics point out that radars are often used as a form of revenue collection, penalizing drivers with what they consider excessive fines.
This negative perception is reinforced by cases of poorly positioned radars or unclear speed limits.
Radars: Friends or Villains?
For the PRF and the concessionaire Arteris Litoral Sul, the radars represent an advancement in road safety, especially in a region that concentrates so much daily traffic.
However, many drivers see these devices as true “financial traps”, especially those who frequently travel the highway.
According to mobility experts, the key to making radars effective and well-accepted lies in the transparency of operations.
Clear signage and educational campaigns are essential for drivers to understand the importance of the imposed limits.
In addition, technology also plays a crucial role.
Modern radars, such as those that will be activated on the Contorno Viário, use advanced monitoring systems that ensure greater precision and reliability.
This should, in theory, reduce the chances of errors and prevent unjust penalties.
What do you think about the installation of these radars? Do they truly contribute to safety or are they just another way of generating revenue? Share your opinion in the comments!
