With 30 Buildings, 25 Telescopes, Planetarium and Parabolic Antennas, the Former NASA Campus in North Carolina — Valued at US$ 30 Million — Combines Historical Value, Technological Structure and Potential for Scientific or Private Use
An unusual announcement is making waves in the North Carolina real estate market, in the United States. A former NASA campus has been put up for sale for US$ 30 million (R$ 162 million). The space, previously used for satellite tracking, is currently deactivated for that purpose.
Built in 1963 at a cost of US$ 240 million (R$ 1.2 billion), the base was named Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (Pari).
The complex occupies 163 acres and includes more than 30 buildings. Among them are a visitor center, library, exhibition areas, a cafeteria with a capacity for 200 people, and dormitories.

The buyer will also have access to extensive technological and scientific infrastructure. The campus houses 25 telescopes, a planetarium, parabolic antennas, data centers, laboratories, radios, generators, and transformers.
The land is surrounded by a 500,000-acre forest, ensuring seclusion and environmental preservation.
The real estate agency NAI Piedmont Triad, responsible for the negotiation, describes the site as a “state-of-the-art facility originally built for NASA and ideal for institutional, laboratory, quantum data, educational research, or for innovative private use.”
NASA Base: Historical Heritage and Current Use
The announcement also highlights the historical value of the campus. According to the text, “originally developed by NASA in the 1960s as part of the space race, this 192-acre campus helped capture the first images of Earth from space and was later used by the NSA during the Cold War as an important satellite communication center.”
Currently, Pari belongs to a nonprofit organization. In addition to serving scientific research and renting facilities, the site is also open to tourism.
“Curious visitors come from all over to check out the NASA heritage museum, the library, the workshops, the planetarium, and the radio telescope,” informs the real estate agency.
