Now, at 68 years old, Gates revealed that if he were founding Microsoft again, he would not follow the original software path, but would focus his efforts on an industry he considers highly profitable and promising: artificial intelligence (AI).
During a recent interview with CNBC, Gates shared that if he were creating a startup today, his focus would be AI. He acknowledges that the technology landscape has changed drastically since Microsoft was founded in 1976, when he and Paul Allen were visionaries in the world of software and personal computing.
Back then, computers were not yet a part of everyday life, and Gates was one of the few who predicted the importance that software would have in modern life. Today, however, artificial intelligence is at the forefront of technological innovation, attracting billions of dollars in investments and generating a race among the largest companies in the world.
According to Gates, AI has already established itself as a highly competitive area, with giants like Google, Nvidia, and OpenAI leading the development of new technologies. “Today, someone could raise billions of dollars for a new AI company, [even if they were] just a few sketch ideas,” said Gates, highlighting the enthusiasm and the amount of capital being channeled into this industry.
He recognizes, however, that for a new company to stand out, it needs something more than just believing in the potential of AI. The differentiator, according to Gates, would be finding a specific application where the technology could add unique value. “To really stand out as a small company, you have to choose something that you will do uniquely,” Gates said.
In other words, instead of directly competing with industry giants, it would be more strategic to identify niches or underexplored areas where AI could bring disruptive innovation.

Bill Gates’ journey in the technology sector has always been marked by the ability to anticipate trends. If in the past his belief in software was seen as visionary, today he sees AI as the next big leap.
However, he also acknowledges the challenges faced by new entrepreneurs seeking space in a market already dominated by established and highly financed companies. “Entering the AI space at this stage brings its own set of challenges,” Gates said.
Even so, he encourages new entrepreneurs to focus on how AI can be used to solve specific problems or improve aspects of people’s daily lives, whether by automating tasks, reducing costs, or generating strategic insights. This more practical vision of AI is, in his opinion, the way for small companies to stand out in an already competitive landscape.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Gates stated that if he were to design the ideal tax system, it would be “tens of billions of dollars poorer,” referring to the need for higher taxes on individuals with large fortunes.
His stance aligns, in many respects, with the proposals of Senator Bernie Sanders, who advocates for a wealth tax that targets the top 0.1% of the U.S. population.
Sanders’ plan aims to tax those with a net worth exceeding $32 million, with a projection to raise $4.35 trillion over a decade, halving the wealth of billionaires in 15 years.
While Gates views Sanders’ proposals as more progressive than the changes he suggests, both share the goal of reducing inequality and ensuring a broader social safety net.
