Brazil and Algeria Sign a New Agreement for the Export of Live Sheep. Learn How This Strategic Partnership Opens a New Market and Benefits the Brazilian Agricultural Business.

Brazil confirmed last Tuesday, (08/19), a new trade agreement that will allow the export of live sheep to Algeria. The negotiation, completed after sanitary discussions between the two countries, marks the 101st market opening for Brazilian agribusiness in 2025.

The measure primarily benefits producers from the North and Northeast regions, where sheep farming plays an essential role in the local economy.

What Is Behind the Agreement with Algeria?

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), the authorization for the export of live sheep was only possible after the definition of sanitary protocols.

“The opening represents a business opportunity, especially for exporters from the North and Northeast of Brazil, where sheep farming has economic and social importance, promoting job creation and regional development,” the ministry revealed.

This type of negotiation ensures that the animals meet the health and food safety requirements of the importing country.

Algeria, with an estimated population of 46 million inhabitants, is already an important trading partner of Brazil.

In 2024 alone, Brazilian exports to the country totaled US$ 2.2 billion, nearly double the amount recorded in 2021.

Impact on the North and Northeast of Brazil

The opening of this new market represents a strategic opportunity for regions with a strong tradition in sheep farming.

In the Northeast, for example, sheep farming is a source of livelihood for thousands of families and contributes to regional development.

With international demand on the rise, it is expected that the agreement will boost the generation of direct and indirect jobs, as well as increase the income of small and medium producers.

The Growth of Brazilian Exports to Algeria

The numbers show that the commercial relationship between Brazil and Algeria has been strengthening. In 2021, Algerian purchases amounted to around US$ 1.3 billion, notably for products from the sugar and alcohol complex, soy, cereals, and flours.

Three years later, this figure has nearly doubled, reinforcing Algeria’s confidence in Brazilian agribusiness.

Now, with the inclusion of sheep exports, expectations are that bilateral trade will gain even more relevance in the coming years.

More Than 400 Market Openings Since 2023

The agreement with Algeria adds to the 401 market openings achieved by Brazil since 2023. This progress comes at a crucial time, as tariffs imposed by the United States have increased the prices of some Brazilian products exported to the U.S. market.

Thus, the diversification of destinations has been essential to maintain the country’s competitiveness in the global scenario.

The negotiation represents not only the chance to expand external sales but also to enhance the productive chain of sheep farming in Brazil.

By conquering new markets, producers gain more stability, and the country strengthens its position as a reference in the international trade of agricultural products.
