Partnership Between Brazil and the United Kingdom Strengthened by Presentation of the R$ 1.2 Trillion New Brazil Industry Plan to Attract Investment and Unlock Trade Barriers.

The relationship between Brazil and the United Kingdom enters a new strategic phase. In a meeting held on Monday (September 22) in Brasília, authorities from both countries outlined plans to enhance bilateral trade, which currently stands at around R$ 6.2 billion. The meeting, led by the Executive Secretary of MDIC, Márcio Elias Rosa, and British Minister Chris Bryant, marked the celebration of 200 years of diplomatic relations and established new areas of cooperation.

The central focus of the Brazilian delegation was to showcase the country’s investment potential, detailing the New Brazil Industry (NIB), which anticipates R$ 1.2 trillion in investments by 2026. According to information from Agência Gov, the official source of the meeting, the initiative aims to drive energy transition, digital transformation, and industrial competitiveness, opening doors for a long-term partnership with the British.

The Pillars of New Cooperation: AI, Sustainability, and Credit

The meeting in the federal capital was not limited to diplomatic formalities. According to Agência Gov, the meeting involved representatives from all departments of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC). The agenda discussed topics deemed crucial for the 21st-century economy: sustainability, modern industrial policy, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), areas where both nations see great potential for collaboration.

To solidify the advancements, memorandums of understanding (MOUs) were signed with practical objectives. One of them aims at cooperation in export credit insurance, facilitating business for companies on both sides. Another memorandum focuses on strengthening good regulatory practices, a key step to reduce bureaucracy and align technical standards between Brazil and the United Kingdom.

R$ 1.2 Trillion on the Table: The Brazilian Bet to Attract Capital

The main asset presented by Brazil was its investment portfolio. Executive Secretary Márcio Elias Rosa detailed the capital attraction policies, highlighting the New Brazil Industry (NIB) and the New PAC. The R$ 1.2 trillion NIB plan, with a deadline until 2026, was the central point to show the United Kingdom that Brazil is focused on digital transformation and energy transition, as reported by Agência Gov.

“This historic meeting reinforces the strength of the Brazilian economy and our commitment to innovation”, stated Márcio Elias Rosa, according to Agência Gov. “This is how we transform opportunities into growth and pave the way for a strategic long-term partnership with the United Kingdom”, added the Executive Secretary of MDIC, signaling that the current R$ 6.2 billion in exchanges is just the starting point for the relationship.

The Challenge of ‘Unlocking’ Technical Barriers

In addition to the credit and regulatory memorandums, Agência Gov highlighted the creation of a specific Working Group. The mission of this group will be to identify and overcome technical barriers to bilateral trade. These barriers, often related to distinct standards and certifications, are one of the main obstacles to accelerating the volume of R$ 6.2 billion.

The British Minister of Trade, Sir Chris Bryant, echoed this need for pragmatism. “My visit helped to unlock some of the difficulties faced by British companies when exporting to these extremely important markets”, Bryant said as reported. He concluded that removing these obstacles will bring “practical benefits and open new business opportunities throughout the UK.”

Geopolitics and the Defense of Multilateralism

The meeting between Brazil and the United Kingdom also served as a platform for Brazil’s geopolitical positioning. Márcio Elias Rosa seized the opportunity to reaffirm Brazil’s commitment to multilateralism, advocating for the World Trade Organization (WTO) as the appropriate forum to resolve disputes and ensure clear rules for all.

This defense of the WTO, reported by Agência Gov, is a veiled criticism of “unilateral measures that harm global trade“. Brazil seeks to ensure a more stable and predictable international business environment, essential for long-term investment plans, such as the strategic partnership with the United Kingdom, to thrive without setbacks.

The rapprochement between Brazil and the United Kingdom, marked by the presentation of a trillion-dollar plan and the signing of practical agreements, signals a new era in their 200-year relationship. The goal is clear: to go far beyond the current R$ 6.2 billion, focusing on innovation and overcoming historical barriers.

But what is the real impact of this on the national industry? Is your company prepared for this cooperation in AI and sustainability? Do you think focusing on the United Kingdom is a good strategy for Brazil at this moment? Share your opinion in the comments; we want to know the view of those on the ground in the market.
