Betting On Growth, The Country Stands Out In Biodiesel Production, Aligning Itself With Global Demand For Cleaner Energy
This year marks a strategic phase in Brazilian biodiesel production, with the government increasing the blend of biodiesel with commercial diesel from 10% (B10) to 12% (B12). The National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) has set targets to achieve a blend of 15% by 2026, and with a focus on decarbonizing the national energy matrix, accelerating this timeline is a real possibility.
With each percentage point increase in the blend, around 650 million additional liters of biodiesel are produced. Thus, according to estimates from the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (ABIOVE), production for 2023 has the potential to exceed 7 billion liters.
Brazil On The Podium Of Global Production

Canadian engineers want to compress air in underground caverns and build plants of up to 500 MW that function as giant lungs to store renewable energy for hours and stabilize entire electrical grids.
-
The World Bank issues urgent warning about jobs after the war in the Middle East and reveals an alarming scenario with rising unemployment, falling income, and the risk of a deep global economic crisis.
-
With millions of Brazilians in debt and interest rates soaring, the proposal to use FGTS to pay off debts reemerges and sparks immediate curiosity: does clearing one’s name this way really change life or just create a temporary sense of relief?
-
British engineers cool air until it turns into liquid, store energy for weeks, and create an “invisible battery” capable of sustaining the power grid when the wind stops and the sun disappears.
Daniel Amaral, director of Economics and Regulatory Affairs at ABIOVE, highlights the evolution of production in the country. “In 2022, national production reached 6.3 billion liters of biodiesel. With the new blend target, the industry gained momentum to invest more, positioning Brazil as the third largest producer of biodiesel in the world.”
Data from the Energy Research Company (EPE) highlight the relevance of Brazilian biodiesel in environmental issues: it can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% when compared to fossil diesel. Since the implementation of the mandatory blend in 2008 until 2022, production totaled 60.1 billion liters, replacing imports and preventing the emission of 130 million tons of CO₂ – equivalent to what is emitted by Paraná in a year.
Global Quality Of Brazilian Biodiesel
Resolution ANP No. 920/23 (RANP 920) raised the quality standards for biodiesel. Currently, Brazil boasts the biodiesel with the highest control and oxidation stability in the world. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) established strict filtering standards and appropriate practices for producers and distributors.
The companies affiliated with ABIOVE, which account for about 30% of the national biodiesel production, promptly adhered to the new guidelines from ANP. They also fully comply with the Bio+ requirements, a seal that confirms the excellence of biodiesel. Developed in partnership with the IQA – Institute of Automotive Quality, the Bio+ seal has recently undergone an update, becoming even more robust.
IQA Certification: Guarantee of Excellence
The Bio+ seal is a certification that verifies the adherence of biodiesel to the standards set by the market and by RANP 920. This certification was the result of collaboration between IQA and ABIOVE, combining their expertise into a verification protocol. To obtain this seal, companies undergo a rigorous evaluation, ensuring the reliability of the products.
Sérgio Fabiano, automotive services manager at IQA, emphasizes the importance of this certification. “As a certifier in the automotive sector, IQA recognizes biodiesel as an essential clean energy matrix. The Bio+ seal is a quality endorsement that brings benefits to companies and consumers.”
