Digital partnership signed this Friday (12) expands cooperation in artificial intelligence, data, semiconductors, cloud, connectivity, and digital public infrastructure, as Brazil and the European Union attempt to reduce technological dependencies and align agendas following the recent trade agreement with Mercosur.

Brazil and the European Union signed a digital partnership this Friday (12) to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, connectivity, data protection, semiconductors, and high-performance computing.

Agreement aims at digital sovereignty

The instrument gives political weight to a technical relationship built over two decades. The partnership places Brazil in a select group of countries with this type of digital cooperation.

The proposal came from the European Union, which maintains similar instruments only with Canada, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. The goal is to intensify joint action in digital areas.

Among the planned points are artificial intelligence governance, digital public infrastructure, significant connectivity, scientific innovation, data protection, and global digital governance.

Brazil and the European Union want to reduce dependency

With the partnership, Brazil and the European Union hope to reduce dependency in key sectors, such as chip manufacturing and cloud services, dominated by American companies.

Minister Esther Dweck stated that the partnership comes at an opportune moment, in light of government initiatives to strengthen digital sovereignty.

She said that President Lula is expected to announce the acquisition of an artificial intelligence supercomputer, as part of the effort to reinforce this agenda.

Commercial Agreement Boosted Digital Advancement

The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Digital Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, linked the partnership to the free trade agreement signed months earlier between the European Union and Mercosur.

During the ceremony, Virkkunen stated that the commercial agreement was an important step and that the bloc wants to take advantage of the benefits achieved.

The digital partnership expands the dialogue between the sides. The topic involves data, chips, cloud, artificial intelligence, and public digital infrastructure. Comment on how this agreement can impact Brazil, the technology industry, digital services, and the relationship with the European Union.
