Brazil overtakes Argentina to obtain the best passport in Latin America

In 2023, Brazil was tied with Argentina in 12th place, however, in 2024, the country moved up one place, after gaining an additional mobility point, while Argentina lost one point, losing its position as the most powerful passport in Latin America.

Brazil's rise as the best passport in Latin America was possible after Japan stopped requiring a visa for tourist trips of up to 90 days.

the ranking Passport Index assigns mobility points to countries based on ease of entry, considering those that do not require a visa under certain circumstances or those that only require a visa upon departure. The study analyzes a total of 199 countries.

Brazil surpasses Argentina and, in addition to occupying 11th place, in 2024 it became the most powerful passport in Latin America among the countries that make up the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India and China). The country added 166 mobility points, of which 115 are from countries that do not require a visa, while 51 require a visa only upon departure. Argentina follows behind, with 164 points.

Brazil surpasses Argentina, but still lags behind Malaysia and Monaco, with 170 points. To tie with them, Brazil, which has the best passport in Latin America, needs four countries to stop requiring visas.

The most powerful passports are those of Emirados Arabes Unidos, which leads the ranking with 180 points, followed by Spain, with 179 points. The weakest passports are those of Afghanistan, which occupies the penultimate position, with 41 points, and Syria, in last place, with 40 points.

The first position is occupied by Singapore, which has the best passport in the world, with access to 195 destinations without the need for a visa, out of a total of 227 different destinations, according to the 2024 Henley Passport Index released in July, a ranking that classifies which passports in the world give access to the most destinations without the need for a prior visa.
