Liderroll Is One of the Companies with a Good Chance of Being Chosen by Embridge to Start the Construction of a New Pipeline in Michigan
The Michigan government in the U.S. is still in discussions with the operator of the Canada, Enbridge, about the project for the new Line 5 pipeline, which is currently still submerged on the bed of Lake Michigan. This remains a concern until the project is defined by the company owning the line. This week, a new round of discussions involving the local community, the Michigan government, and the Canadian company responsible for the pipeline was held. The big surprise of the meeting was the participation of Paulo Fernandes, president of the Brazilian company Liderroll.
Brazilian Liderroll May Be Selected for Construction in Michigan
Fernandes traveled to Michigan and participated in the public hearing, held meetings, and strategic discussions with Ryan Mitchell, Innovation Manager of the Michigan government, and also with Peter Holran, a representative of Enbridge and the company’s liaison with government authorities.
It is important to remember that, a few years ago, an anchor from a ship hit the pipeline, causing an unprecedented environmental disaster in the region, and Enbridge decided to construct a tunnel beneath the lake and lay a new replacement pipeline to prevent another accident. However, the company that will carry out the construction has still not been defined.

The pipeline will be approximately 7km and 30 inches, replacing the current pipeline. There are also plans for the installation of two additional lines in the same tunnel. During the hearings, the Canadian company presented technology from Liderroll, which is considered internationally the best way to lay gas and oil pipelines in confined environments such as tunnels, which was approved by the Michigan government as well as by the community during discussions.
Enbridge Is Evaluating Proposals
Liderroll has designed, produced, built, and launched four different lines in two tunnels in Brazil, one of 38 inches in Rio de Janeiro, and three pipelines of various diameters within the GASTAU Tunnel, beneath the coastal mountain range in São Paulo. By the end of 2022 or early 2023, the choice of the technology to be used for the project launch within the tunnel in Michigan will be presented.
Until then, Enbridge is evaluating proposals, but from what is known about the difficulties of constructing the tunnel, which will be 170 meters from the surface of the lake, the choice of Liderroll’s technology seems established, having already been tested, approved, and received international awards.
The Brazilian company holds patents both in the U.S. and Canada, but the presence of the company’s executive at the public hearing showed Liderroll’s involvement in the project, in addition to commercial interest. Paulo Fernandes stated he was surprised by the warm reception from American authorities and also from the Embridge representative.
Liderroll Comments on Visit to the U.S.
According to Paulo Fernandes, it was possible to perceive that the Canadian company is very well-intentioned and wants to do the right thing, taking very careful and thoughtful steps.
Due to the sensitivity and scope of the project, the Michigan government is also focused and wants everything to go as smoothly as possible, both in execution and throughout the operational period, which will be licensed for 99 years.
Now, it will be necessary to wait for the definition of who the contractor will be that will be responsible for the entire pipeline project, especially this special crossing section with the tunnel, and then it will be possible to move forward with what the company proposes.
