Eduardo Saverin, The Richest Brazilian in the World, Triples Fortune With Success of Meta, Parent Company of Facebook and Other Social Networks
Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook, has become the richest Brazilian in the world, according to the 2024 Billionaires List released by Forbes. With an estimated net worth of US$ 28 billion (R$ 141.4 billion), Saverin ranks 60th among the richest men on the planet. His fortune almost tripled from 2023 to 2024, driven by the appreciation of Meta’s shares, the company that owns Facebook and other popular platforms like Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
Born in São Paulo in 1982, Eduardo Saverin moved with his family to Miami, USA, at the age of 11. He graduated in Economics from Harvard University, where he became involved in the project Thefacebook, alongside Mark Zuckerberg and others, in 2004. Thefacebook, which started as a social network exclusive for Harvard students, soon expanded and became the Facebook we know today.
Conflicts and Renunciation of American Citizenship
However, the partnership with Zuckerberg was not without conflicts. Eduardo Saverin and the other partners disagreed about the future of Facebook, leading to mutual accusations. Eduardo Saverin even sued Zuckerberg, resulting in an out-of-court settlement. In 2009, Eduardo Saverin immigrated to Singapore and renounced his American citizenship in 2011, just before Facebook’s IPO, saving millions in taxes and generating controversy in the media.
