Technical cooperation agreement signed in Belo Horizonte foresees support from the Government of Minas to the city hall in the preparation of the basic and executive projects of the Ring Road, a planned connection between BR-265 and MG-383 to reduce heavy traffic in the historic urban area.

The São João del-Rei Ring Road began a new phase with the signing of a technical cooperation agreement between the Government of Minas and the municipality. The initiative marks the beginning of the necessary studies to implement the planned road bypass for the historic city.

The document was signed at the Administrative City, in Belo Horizonte, through the State Secretariat of Infrastructure, Mobility and Partnerships, together with the Department of Highways of Minas Gerais.

The planned route will connect BR-265, near the Bahamas Supermarket, to MG-383, at the airport junction.

The proposal seeks to reduce the circulation of heavy vehicles within the urban area. This aims to contribute to preserving the historical, cultural, and environmental heritage, as well as to favor logistics, stimulate investments, and strengthen the tourist potential of the municipality.

In February, Governor Mateus Simões announced the allocation of resources for the work, whose execution will be the responsibility of the city hall.

On the occasion, he stated that removing the flow of trucks and through vehicles will help reduce asphalt problems, improve traffic, and protect historical heritage.

State technical support

Under the agreement, the Government of Minas will provide technical and institutional support during the preparation of the engineering projects, offering guidelines and parameters used by the State. The deputy secretary of the department, Pedro Calixto, stated that the analysis will seek to accelerate the signing of the agreement and the release of the necessary resources.

The DER-MG will provide specialized support in sections with intersections between the Ring Road and state highways. It will also verify the compliance of the projects with current standards and collaborate in the technical analysis of bridges and viaducts.

The general director of DER-MG, Matheus Novais, highlighted that the bypass should ease urban traffic, improve mobility, enhance the quality of life for residents, and generate positive impacts for the entire region.

Next steps

The study phase, including local data collection and the development of basic and executive engineering projects, is expected to be completed within six months. The technical cooperation agreement will remain in effect for twelve months.

Mayor Aurélio Suenes thanked the commitment made and expressed hope for the celebration of the agreement to start the works.

What is the importance of a ring road for a city?

A ring road is a road built to divert traffic that does not need to enter the city center, mainly trucks, trailers, and through vehicles. In practice, it can bring several benefits:

  • Reduces congestion by removing vehicles that only pass through the municipality from the center.
  • Decreases accidents by separating heavy traffic from urban traffic, where pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists circulate.
  • Preserves streets and avenues since heavy trucks accelerate the wear of asphalt and road structures.
  • Protects historical heritage by avoiding vibrations, pollution, and impacts caused by intense traffic in old areas.
  • Improves mobility by reducing travel time for residents and visitors.
  • Favors logistics by allowing cargo to reach its destination faster and with lower operational costs.
  • Stimulates new investments as companies tend to value cities with more efficient road access.
  • Strengthens tourism by making the center more pleasant, safe, and less polluted for visitors.
  • Improves quality of life with less noise, pollutant emissions, and heavy traffic in residential areas.
