Attuned to the Growing Demand in the Sector, Group Built a Fifth Inspection Laboratory in Mato Grosso, Capable of Daily Analysis of 13 Thousand Samples

São Paulo, March 11, 2024 – Leader in Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC), Bureau Veritas is responsible for certifying the quality of approximately 55% of the last Cotton Harvest 2022 | 2023. With the harvest completed, Brazilian cotton production reached the mark of 3.27 million tons of fiber, an increase of 28% compared to the previous harvest. Anticipating the increase in demand, the Group inaugurated last year its fifth cotton fiber inspection laboratory in Lucas do Rio Verde/MT, increasing its analysis capacity to 55 thousand samples per day.

“Brazil is the second largest cotton exporter in the world and Bureau Veritas inspects more than half of Brazilian production. Our analyses validate and certify all the work of the cotton grower in conducting their crop and processing the cotton, directly impacting its market value and certifying compliance with high standard parameters to investors,” says Guilherme Cauduro, Director of Agribusiness, Food & Commodities at Bureau Veritas.

Brazilian cotton farming has been gaining increasing space in the global market, driven by the rising demand from countries like China, Turkey, and Bangladesh. Bureau Veritas plays a key role in certifying the quality of the cotton fiber produced in the country. Among the aspects analyzed are thickness, strength, elongation, maturity, brightness, yellowing, and impurity. Based on the reports, producers reaffirm to their clients the compliance and quality level of the product, which are essential for negotiating prices and volume of purchase.

The largest cotton production in Brazil comes from Mato Grosso, where Bureau Veritas has the largest cotton fiber analysis center in Latin America in Sapezal (with a capacity of 15 thousand samples/day), in addition to units in Rondonópolis, Sorriso, Campo Novo do Parecis, and now, in Lucas do Rio Verde. The choice of the municipality in Mato Grosso for the construction of the Group’s fifth cotton laboratory reflects the importance of the region for national cotton farming. With a capacity to verify 13 thousand daily samples and occupying a space of 800 m², the new unit has a specialized team in technical inspection of cotton fiber, as well as eight machines, which ensure agility, reliability, and credibility of the analyses. Combined, the five laboratories can verify more than 7 million samples. During the peak of the harvest, Bureau Veritas also helps generate income, opening more than 300 job positions.

The Group’s five laboratories are accredited by the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa) and follow the standards of reference organizations in the sector, such as United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), The International Cotton Association (ICA Liverpool), Bremen Cotton Association, and Bremen Fiber Institute. Throughout the year 2023, all laboratories were accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), representing an important milestone and providing even more credibility to the results certified by the Group’s Laboratories. The five units are also in the process of ISO 17025 certification, an international standard that certifies the quality and competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
