The SUV From Chinese Manufacturer BYD Is a Bet to Conquer the Electric Vehicle Market in the Third Quarter, Challenging Tesla.
Tesla is the best-selling electric vehicle brand in the world, but it is currently facing threats from competitors like the Chinese manufacturer BYD, which is rapidly closing in on electric SUV sales. In the third quarter, BYD was only 3,000 cars away from reaching Tesla, and it plans to launch more models to attract a broader range of consumers interested in electric SUVs, with affordable and competitive prices.
With the increasing competition in the affordable electric vehicle market, it is crucial for automakers like Tesla to expand their product lines to offer more affordable options. The search for an affordable electric SUV has driven growth in the automotive sector, and companies need to adapt to consumer demands for accessible electric cars.
BYD Yuan UP: The New Electric SUV From The Chinese Manufacturer
The BYD Yuan UP Electric SUV might be exactly what the brand needs to fill this gap. Or even, make the brand surpass Tesla.

As originally reported by CarNewsChina, photos of the Yuan UP leaked in documents from the country’s Ministry of Information Technology. This agency is the last stop in the process of approval for cars to be sold in China. It’s not ideal for automakers, but it’s great for those covering the automotive sector – it allows us to see the designs and final specifications of some vehicles before they are even put on sale.
The BYD Yuan UP Electric SUV is a compact electric vehicle, about 4.30 meters in length. This is approximately the size of a Chevrolet Tracker or Hyundai Creta. The power comes from a single motor, producing 93 or 174 horsepower power.
The Popular SUV Market and the Launch of the Affordable Electric SUV
Importantly, the Yuan UP appears to share at least the powertrain from its entry-level version with the successful BYD Dolphin. Considering its appearance that suggests ‘low cost’, the BYD Yuan UP Electric SUV seems to be the SUV-style counterpart of the quickly selling Dolphin and the BYD Dolphin Mini (Seagull). It’s clear that it is not exactly a challenge for the more sophisticated Model Y and Model X, but that is not the point here.
It doesn’t take a specialist to see that SUVs are taking off all over the world, especially in the compact segment. Additionally, the Dolphin and Seagull from BYD have been extremely successful; BYD launched the Seagull in the third quarter of this year and has already produced over 200,000 units this year. Similarly, BYD has already manufactured over 500,000 Dolphins – both cars sell very well, despite being ‘non-SUV’ electric vehicles.
The Success of the Affordable SUV
The BYD Yuan UP Electric SUV seems like it could start at a price of around US$ 14,000, which is higher than the approximately US$ 11,000 of the BYD Seagull, but below the US$ 16,000 price tag of the Dolphin (R$ 149,900 in Brazil). Considering that everyone loves SUVs, the BYD Yuan UP is poised to conquer the electric vehicle market in China and possibly the rest of the world. If the BYD Electric SUV Yuan UP sells like the Seagull and Dolphin, Tesla’s title as the best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer is truly threatened.
