Assessments Reveal Significant Energy Savings and CO2 Reduction
The energy assessments conducted by ABB on over 2,000 motor systems revealed an average potential energy savings of 31% per motor. These savings, equivalent to the annual usage of 1.25 million households, highlight the significant impact that optimizing industrial electric motors can have on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The total energy savings over the lifetime of these systems is estimated at over 2.1 terawatt-hours (TWh).
The Impact of Upgrading Electric Motors
From June to September 2023, ABB extensively analyzed industrial electric motors, identifying significant energy-saving potential. Upgrading old motors, many over 20 years old, with high-efficiency technologies like variable speed drives (VSDs) can lead to considerable reductions in electricity consumption. This transformation not only benefits the environment through lower CO2 emissions but also offers an attractive return on investment (ROI), ranging from three to six months, depending on the regional energy mix and energy costs.
Energy Efficiency: A Path to Emission Reductions
Energy efficiency is key to achieving significant reductions in CO2 emissions. ABB highlights that by applying its recommendations across all audited motors, it would be possible to achieve savings equivalent to reducing emissions from a coal-fired power plant for several months. This not only contributes to a more sustainable future but also offers economic advantages for companies, aligning with global discussions on climate change, such as those at COP28.
