The Chinese electric startup, Kandi, announces that its small electric car K27 has been approved for California roads and will cost just $ 7,999 in the state after incentives. Several Chinese automakers are currently looking to expand outside of China, and this is especially true for electric vehicle manufacturers.

They quickly realized that it was too expensive for the U.S. market and changed the price to $ 27,499 and $ 17,499, respectively. Although they mentioned that these prices are “for the launch” and are expected to rise later, the timeline is unclear.
The four-passenger K27 from China is just 136 inches long, making it over thirty centimeters shorter than the Mitsubishi Mirage, which is probably the closest affordable gasoline vehicle, and the much more expensive Mini Cooper SE electric car. It will include a backup camera as required by the federal government, and the company notes that it features a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and Bluetooth connectivity.
Accessing the headline-grabbing price of Kandi – which places this new EV in the same territory as well-used Nissan Leaf models – depends on claiming various incentives and getting a limited-time discount from Kandi. The price of the K27 is $ 20,499 before any credits or incentives, but the company has offered a $ 3,000 discount for the first 1,000 orders, lowering the number to $ 17,499. A $ 2,000 incentive in California and eligibility for the $ 7,500 EV tax credit (certainly less likely for buyers in that price range) takes the electric car down to the stated $ 7,999.
