Chery Takes a Decisive Step to Enter the Hotly Contested Medium Pickup Market With the Registration of a New Plug-In Hybrid Model, Signaling a Strategy to Compete Directly With Giants Like Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet S10.

The Chinese brand, present in Brazil since before the so-called “Chinese invasion” in the automotive sector, now shows a clear ambition to capture a share of this segment that generates billions.

According to information released by the Australian portal Car Expert, Chery has registered a conceptual prototype of a medium plug-in hybrid pickup in Argentina that has the potential to be launched in Oceania and possibly in other markets.

This launch comes shortly after the manufacturer confirmed it would bring an unprecedented pickup to the Brazilian market in 2025, continuing the KP11 project, which was presented in China in November 2024.

However, according to Chery’s international president, Zhang Guibling, the KP11 pickup will not be marketed in Oceania.

In its place, a new, larger truck will be launched, directly targeting rivals BYD Shark, Toyota Hilux, and Ford Ranger.

Design and Dimensions of the Prototype

The newly registered prototype, identified by the code F700, is a model from Jetour, a sub-brand of Chery, which still presents conceptual elements, such as suicide doors and large diameter wheels.

Our team recorded the model during a visit to the Auto Show in Argentina, where the vehicle drew attention for its modern and robust design, clearly inspired by the lines of the Ford Ranger and BYD Shark.

The design of the Jetour F700 stands out for a set of “C”-shaped headlights, a hood with striking geometric lines, and a front bar that appears to be illuminated, complemented by a robust black shiny bumper, as well as the front grille.

At the rear, the model follows the trend of competing Chinese and American brands, with vertical taillights and a black glossy pickup bed cover that displays the sub-brand’s name in a centralized and illuminated manner.

This aesthetic contrasts with that of the KP11, which features an imposing front grille, with the name “Chery” prominently displayed and sharp headlights aligned with the hood.

In addition to the look, the Jetour F700 promises competitive dimensions, as it is expected to be larger than the KP11—which, according to the Rutamotor portal, will be about 5.30 meters long.

In comparison, the Hilux, Ranger, and S10 measure 5.32 m, 5.35 m, and 5.36 m, respectively.

The F700 concept utilizes the body of the Jetour Zongheng G700, a large SUV measuring 5.10 meters available in the brand’s portfolio, reinforcing the proposal of robustness and space.

Power and Technology

Despite the mystery surrounding official details, it is expected that the truck will come equipped with a plug-in hybrid system, combining a 2.0 turbo gasoline four-cylinder engine capable of generating up to 213 horsepower with two electric motors.

This combination would result in impressive 761 horsepower and 81.1 kgfm of torque, figures that would place the model at the technological forefront of the segment.

Another possibility raised is the use of extended range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, already applied in the Jetour G900 SUV, which combines higher power with greater range for the vehicle.

Both configurations should feature an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing the battery to charge from 20% to 80% in just six minutes, an innovation that promises to revolutionize the user experience in the pickup segment.

Other curiosities about the F700 include the likely adoption of air suspension, capable of raising ground clearance by up to 350 millimeters and allowing the vehicle to rotate on its own axis—features already outfitted in the Jetour G700 SUV, enhancing the model’s off-road appeal and versatility.

The Future of the Chery Pickup in Brazil

Regarding the engine of Himla, the already confirmed pickup from Chery, there are expectations that it will offer combustion, plug-in hybrid, and extended range electric options.

Unlike traditional competitors that bet on turbodiesel engines, Chery is expected to discard this technology and invest in 2.4 turbo gasoline engines, aiming to meet trends in electrification and sustainability in the automotive sector.

For now, there are no official confirmations about the launch of these models in the Brazilian market, but the manufacturer’s interest is evident given the growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.

Partnership With Jaecoo and Plans for Brazil

Additionally, the KP11 concept may serve as the basis for a medium pickup from Jaecoo, Chery’s luxury brand that arrived in Brazil in April 2024.

According to Chery’s global CEO, Mr. Zhang, the possibility of launching in Brazil under the Jaecoo banner reinforces the brand’s strategy to diversify its portfolio and capture different audiences.

This pickup should feature a sophisticated design, with less angular lines, a diamond-patterned front grille, and individual headlights with a diamond-inspired shape, following the style of the bumper.

The interior finish is also expected to impress, featuring a cabin inspired by the Omoda 5, the coupe SUV from the brand partner Jaecoo, in addition to plug-in hybrid or electric powertrains to meet the demand for efficiency and technology.

Chery’s entry into the medium pickup segment with hybrid and electric proposals reinforces a global trend and shows that the Brazilian market may be about to receive a new generation of trucks focused on innovation, sustainability, and performance.
