Animation Released By State Broadcaster Shows Weapon Launched By Vehicle That Spreads Filaments To Cause Short Circuits In Electric Installations

China has released images of a new weapon that caught attention for its ability to disable electrical networks without direct explosions.

The announcement was made by the state broadcaster CCTV, which aired an animation showing how the device works.

According to the presentation, the bomb is capable of causing blackouts in areas of up to 10,000 square meters, directly affecting enemy power plants and substations.

Functioning Of The Weapon

The bomb is launched by a ground vehicle. Upon reaching a certain altitude, it releases 90 cylindrical submunitions that disperse in the air.

These munitions detonate in sequence, releasing fine carbon filaments. The filaments are chemically treated and designed to cause short circuits in high voltage structures.

According to CCTV, the weapon’s main objective is to disrupt the enemy’s command and control systems.

The bomb has an estimated range of 290 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing 490 kilograms. The broadcaster highlighted that the device could be useful in attacks against military substations or other strategic infrastructures.

No Direct Physical Impact

One of the highlights of this weapon, according to the Chinese presentation, is the ability to damage electrical systems without causing direct physical destruction.

The strategy would be to use the carbon filaments to target transformers and sensitive components of the electrical grid, causing total blackouts in the targets.

Despite the release of the animation and the basic specifications, CCTV did not inform when or if the bomb will actually be used by the Chinese Armed Forces.

The broadcaster limited itself to calling the device “a mysterious type of domestically manufactured missile.”

Possible Applications

The newspaper South China Morning Post noted that it is still unknown what stage the weapon’s development is at.

Meanwhile, Asia Times suggested that the bomb could be part of a siege strategy against Taiwan. The plan, according to the published analysis, would be to disable the island’s electrical grid as part of a potential military offensive.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has declared on several occasions that it does not rule out the use of force to integrate the island. However, no Chinese official has confirmed the use of this new bomb for such a purpose.

Known Technology

Although the Chinese version of the bomb has generated repercussions, the concept behind the weapon is not new.

The United States has used similar devices in past wars. In 2003, for example, three Tomahawk missiles with BLU-114/B type bombs were launched against Iraq.

The result was a thirty-day blackout in the city of Nasiriyah, as reported by Human Rights Watch.

In the Kosovo war, in 1999, bombs with the same function were used by NATO and the United States.

About 70% of the territory of the former Yugoslavia was left without power after the attacks. The stated goal was to pressure the local government to meet international demands.

So far, there is no official confirmation that the new bomb revealed by China is already active in its military arsenal.
