They used a spectrum analyzer, an instrument that detects the strength of electrical signals and their frequencies, to locate sources of noise potentially harmful to the connection.

At exactly 7 AM, the devices picked up a massive spike of electrical interference throughout the town.

The team followed the signal to a residence where a resident turned on his old tube TV every morning to watch the morning programming.

How The TV Interfered With The Internet?

The technical explanation lies in a phenomenon called SHINE (Single High-level Impulse Noise), which occurs when a device emits electromagnetic noise strong enough to affect broadband signals — especially in older networks that use copper cables, like the DSL system that served the village.

In other words, every time the TV was turned on, it generated a pulse of interference that overwhelmed the internet signal, leaving the town completely without internet for a few minutes.

Resident Surprised By The Impact

The owner of the television was surprised to learn that his habit of turning on the TV at 7 AM was directly linked to the internet interruptions affecting the entire community.

According to technical reports, he had no idea that the device could cause such a significant problem and was shocked to discover the source of the failures.

After receiving the explanation, the resident decided to stop using the old television. This brought immediate relief to the neighbors, who began to have stable internet every morning since then.

Although the simple decision of the resident to stop using the old tube TV ended the daily interruptions, engineers also plan a long-term solution for the town.

The proposal is to bring a fiber optic infrastructure to Aberhosan, a technology that is much less susceptible to external electrical interference, ensuring that the village does not experience internet outages for similar reasons in the future.
