Direct Link Between Protostars And Earth’s Water
Before this study, science already knew there was a connection between Earth’s water, comets, and the interstellar medium. However, there was a lack of a clear link between protostars and comets.
The water found in V883 Orion changed this scenario. It has a similar ratio of deuterium to hydrogen as the water in the solar system, thus establishing a direct connection.
This indicates that the water molecules we know today are older than previously thought, formed even before the Sun and planets. This discovery is fundamental to understanding the history of water on our planet and how it arrived here intact after billions of years.
How Water Travels Through The Universe
Margot Leemker, an astronomer from Leiden University and co-author of the study, explained that most of the water in the interstellar medium forms as ice. This ice deposits on tiny dust grains within the space clouds.
Over time, these clouds collapse under gravity, forming young stars and protoplanetary disks.
Most impressively, this water remains unchanged throughout the process, becoming part of new solar systems, planets, and comets. In the case of V883 Orion, the protostar was hot enough to turn the ice into gas.
This allowed astronomers to measure the composition of the water and confirm that it retained its original characteristics through all stages of solar system formation.
The Missing Link In The History Of Water
This discovery fills an important gap in understanding the origin of water in the solar system. “Until now, the water chain in the development of our solar system was broken,” stated John Tobin.
Merel van ‘t Hoff, an astronomer from the University of Michigan and co-author of the study, added that planetary systems, including ours, received large amounts of water during their formation. This revelation offers an unprecedented glimpse into the early history of the solar system.
The water we see today on Earth has traversed the universe for billions of years, from its formation in interstellar clouds, remaining unchanged.
This discovery not only changes how we understand the origin of Earth’s water but also brings new perspectives on water in other planetary systems.
