With 1.9 Million Square Meters and 700 Stores, Iran Mall in Tehran Is the Largest Mall in the World and a Symbol of Iranian Grandeur in the Middle East.

At the foot of the Alborz Mountains, in the northwest zone of Tehran, stands one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in the Middle East: the Iran Mall, the largest shopping center in the world by total built area. With 1.9 million square meters, the complex is not just a commercial center — it is a true covered city designed to combine consumption, culture, religion, and leisure in a single monumental structure.

Partially inaugurated in 2018 and still expanding, Iran Mall represents the pinnacle of modern Iranian engineering and the country’s desire to assert its technological and economic capabilities amid international sanctions. The project was developed by the Ayandeh Bank Investment Group and financed by local private capital. Its first phase already occupies 1.4 million square meters, and the second phase, expected to be completed by 2026, will raise the total area to an impressive 1.9 million square meters — surpassing all competitors on the planet.

A City Under One Roof

The scale of Iran Mall defies any comparison. The complex houses more than 700 stores, a hypermarket of 20,000 square meters, cinema and theater halls, theme parks, residential areas, five-star hotels, and even a convention center.

In the basement, there are 12,000 parking spaces, equivalent to the fleet of a medium-sized city.

But what truly sets Iran Mall apart from other giants of global retail is its cultural conception. The mall was designed not only as a place of consumption but as a national symbol of pride and Iranian identity.

Inside, there is a mosque inspired by Isfahan architecture, an indoor Persian garden with fountains and handmade mosaics, and a monumental library with 67,000 volumes, all open to the public.

The complex also includes an Olympic-standard ice skating rink, a water park, a historical museum with Islamic and Persian works, as well as a luxury hotel with more than 300 suites. Visitors can spend days inside the mall without needing to leave — there are hospitals, gyms, gourmet restaurants, and even an urban farm area that provides fresh herbs and vegetables for the internal restaurants.

Monumental Architecture and Modern Persian Design

Iran Mall combines traditional Persian architecture with contemporary design. The use of white marble, colorful mosaics, and Islamic-inspired stained glass creates an atmosphere of culturally authentic luxury.

The main structure has seven floors, covered by a series of domes and skylights that allow natural light and thermal control — an efficient solution in a country with scorching summers.

The engineers designed the building to withstand earthquakes, incorporating deep foundations and seismic damping systems. The project was led by hundreds of Iranian architects and international consultants, and its construction mobilized more than 25,000 workers over a decade.

The heart of the mall is the Traditional Bazaar, an area of 20,000 square meters inspired by the ancient markets of Isfahan and Shiraz, with more than 200 stores selling crafts, carpets, and jewelry. Visitors walk through corridors with ornate domes, walls covered with tiles, and central fountains — a contrast between the past and modernity that defines the visual identity of Iran Mall.

The Economic and Social Impact

Besides being a tourist attraction, Iran Mall is an economic engine for Tehran. It is estimated to generate more than 25,000 direct jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs, boosting retail, hospitality, and the events sector.

Its construction and maintenance drive entire chains of the local industry, from material supply to food production.

The mall also serves as a cultural and diplomatic center: the Iranian government often utilizes its halls for international exhibitions, technology fairs, and art shows. This makes Iran Mall not only the largest shopping mall in the world but also a political symbol of resilience and national modernization, demonstrating that even under global economic pressure, Iran is still capable of producing megaprojects of global reach.

Global Comparisons and Records

Before Iran Mall, the title of “largest mall in the world” belonged to the New South China Mall in Dongguan, with 600,000 square meters of rentable area, although part of it remained vacant for years.

The Dubai Mall, in the United Arab Emirates, is another giant — with 1.1 million square meters — but still smaller than the Iranian complex in total area.

Iran Mall surpasses all in physical size and functional diversity. Its area is so vast that it equals 270 football fields, and its interior has more square meters of flooring than the entire city of Vatican City.

This feat has solidified Iran in a unique position: a country that, despite severe economic restrictions, erected one of the grandest constructions on the planet, redefining the concept of a shopping center.

A New Landmark in the Middle Eastern Landscape

Iran Mall has become the new postcard of Tehran. Viewed from above, it is a monumental mass of concrete and glass that shines under the desert sun, surrounded by expressways and symmetrical gardens. At night, its facades illuminate with projections of Persian art, transforming the location into a visual spectacle that attracts visitors from all over the country.

More than a shopping center, Iran Mall is a monument to Iranian national pride — a reminder that even amid political crises and international sanctions, the country still finds strength to dream big and build on an epic scale.
