Since December 12, 2022, self-employed workers registered as Individual Micro-Entrepreneurs (MEI) can notice a significant difference in their records compared to those made previously.
From this date, the CPF of the holder is no longer required in the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ). The Government has altered the CNPJ of all MEIs. All this change was made by an announcement from the Federal Revenue Service, which stemmed from a demand from the category, which had concerns about having to include personal data in the official company registration. Because of this, the agency, in partnership with the Special Secretariat for Micro and Small Businesses (SEMPE), redefined the standard for the business name of MEIs.
If the micro-entrepreneur who registered as MEI before December 12, 2022, wishes to adopt the new CNPJ model, they can make the request quickly and easily through the Entrepreneur Portal.
Shortly after submitting the request, the entrepreneur will receive the most updated version of the Business Registration without their CPF visible. It is important to highlight that this change follows the guidelines of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD).

Some Other MEI Updates for 2023
More changes are expected to happen involving this category, which will also be determined by the Federal Revenue Service. The National Network for the Simplification of Company and Business Registration and Legalization (Redesim), which is responsible for the MEI deregistration process, has updated this process to unlink from the regime.
With even less bureaucracy, the micro-entrepreneur who wants to deregister their MEI can complete the entire process in a few steps, which is done on the gov.br Portal. Previously, deregistering from MEI through the digital platform was only possible for those who had the silver or gold seal.
After all these changes, digital requests can also be made by entrepreneurs who have the bronze reliability seal, which previously had even more limited access to platform services. Authorized entrepreneurs must have registered with the CNPJ by around March 15, 2022.
Some future updates that may happen soon involve the annual revenue limit of the category. The Complementary Bill (PLC) proposing this change has already been fully approved by the Senate for this year, 2023.
The proposal states that the limit of R$ 81,000 will increase to R$ 144,913.41 for this year. If approved in the Chamber of Deputies, the PLC will proceed to the President of the Republic, who will decide whether to sanction the project or not.
