Understand The Practice Of Playing Music For Dairy Cows And How This Effective Strategy Facilitated Milking And Brings A Series Of Benefits!

What once seemed like an eccentricity, the practice of playing music for dairy cows, is establishing itself as an effective strategy that facilitates milking and brings a series of tangible benefits for production. A melodic revolution is gaining strength in Brazilian dairies.

Farmers and researchers are discovering that the right rhythm can be as important as good nutrition for animal welfare and, consequently, for the quality and quantity of milk.

The Symphony Of Milking: More Calm And More Milk

The idea of using music in the milking environment is not new, but its recognition as a serious management tool has grown exponentially. Calmness and stress reduction are the main gains observed.

Zoologist Natália Borba, in an interview with Estadão, highlights that a peaceful environment is crucial for the welfare of cows. Stress, caused by loud noises, abrupt movements, or even inadequate handling, releases hormones like cortisol, which inhibit oxytocin, the hormone responsible for milk ejection.

By introducing soft melodies with a steady rhythm, such as classical music or even some calmer popular songs, the animals show less agitation, fewer kicks, and a more relaxed posture.

This tranquility results in a more continuous flow of milk and, in many cases, a larger volume. Milking, which could previously be a moment of tension, transforms into a smoother and more efficient process.

Benefits Beyond The Bucket: Health And Longevity

The positive impacts of music on dairy cows go far beyond the milking moment. A pleasant sound environment contributes to reducing the overall stress of the herd, which directly reflects on the health of the animals.

Less stressed cows tend to have a more robust immune system, being less susceptible to diseases.

Additionally, the reduction of nervousness and aggression can decrease injuries and accidents among the animals themselves as well as with the handlers.

The greater ease during milking also optimizes the work of the team, making it less taxing and more productive. This can lead to a better quality of life for workers and, consequently, a higher retention of skilled labor in the field.

What Type Of Music Is Ideal For Cattle?

Although more in-depth scientific studies on the musical genres preferred by cows are still in development, practical experience has shown that classical music, with its harmonious melodies and rhythmic cadences, is often cited as the most effective.

Very lively rhythms or strong beats should be avoided, as they can have the opposite effect, causing agitation.

Ongoing research and understanding of animal behavior are crucial for refining management practices.

Music, in this scenario, emerges as a simple, low-cost tool with high potential to transform dairy farming, ensuring not only productivity but also the welfare and longevity of dairy cows.

It is science and sensitivity coming together to create a more harmonious and productive farm.
